Pirates manager John Russell confirmed that newly acquired Jeff Karstens will start against the Cubs on Friday. Karstens, 25, will be making his first big-league start of the season. He was 6-4 with a 3.80 ERA with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. In 15 major-league appearances, the right-hander is 3-5 with a 5.65 ERA.

Karstens does not have a dominating pitch. He sports an average fastball, curveball, and slider. His best pitch is an above average changeup which is where he generates a lot of his weak fly outs.

From what I can tell this guy is not very good. He has had groin problems and spent considerable time on Yankees DL this year before they gave up on him in the trade for Nady.

I will be surprised if Karstens gets past the 4th inning.

Cubs -1.5 -110

I understand about a letdown but the Pirates have given up on the season and traded away their best players. I think many would be hard pressed to name 3 players on their roster.

Pirates on the road 18-32...ties for lowest wins in MLB.
Despite the problems with the Marlins the Cubs are still the best at home at 39-14. I will take my chances with the Cubs to blow this kid out.

FWIW, Vegas lives for plays like these. Anyone with Sportscenter is thinking the same type of logic here and assume to bet against the Pirates today, but i have a feeling the game will be closer then some might think. BL either way. :toast:

Im a Yankees fan and watched this clown pitch plenty
He sucks always got bombed I dont see any difference today with one of the best teams in baseball.
I know people are talking let down but look at it the other way at home feeling good after spanking the brews look for it to keep riding and having fun spanking them.
You guys can come up with all the cliches you want but I will be laughing at how some here thought this would be a close game while the Cubs are winning 10-2 somewhere in the 6th and I got them on the run line!!!!

You probably bet the Yanks RL with Jaba (-280) the other day as well. Maybe your on to something, big RL games might be the way to go??? Betting Big Fav RL's are a quick way to get your bankroll crushed, regardless how many times you have "seen" a pitcher. If you still have pinnacle and buy it down to -1 is one thing, but laying 2 runs in bases is INSANE. But then again, what do i know, maybe i need to bet your "lock of the year". Heres to you, Yankee fan :103631605

This guy is a good pitcher to come in long relief when a game is a blowout that is all

It would be hard to back Pittsburgh here obviously but I think Twisted one is right we should wait until the lineups come out and see if Lou rests anyone today. Buccos traded two of their biggest bats but Marquis can implode at any moment. If I play anything it will have to be Cubs RL but not sure as of yet.

you do know the cubs have great players coming off the bench so he can rest ramirez put derosa there fontenot at second put ward at first in the OF and reed or edmonds in center. Not really a big weakness. Unless lou lets marquis eat innings again while getting shelled oh well thats why i bet the over incase too

FWIW, some recent trends:

-Pirates are 18-48 in their last 66 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600.
-Pirates are 13-46 in their last 59 games as an underdog of +201 or greater.
-Cubs are 41-13 in their last 54 home games vs. a team with a losing record.
-Cubs are 9-1 in Marquis' last 10 home starts vs. a team with a losing record.
-Cubs are 20-6 in Marquis' last 26 home starts.

Cubs bench is not great they are good and can play many positions but let's not crown them yet. They are who we think they are.

Pirates manager doesn't sound too confident about Karsten:

“I don’t expect him to go out and throw eight shutout innings,” manager John Russell told the Pirates’ official Web site. “I’m just looking for the actions in his pitches, how he competes (and) mound presence.”
