former University of Kentucky basketball star is accused of sexually assaulting a teenager.
The Orlando, Florida sheriff's department took Jack "Goose" Givens into custody Monday night.
Givens admits the charges against him are serious, but says he's not guilty.
Tuesday, Givens spoke out for the first time, claiming his innocence in court and in the world of public opinion.
The man who made a name for himself on the court and on the airwaves now finds himself in trouble with the law.
A 14-year-old Orlando teenager claims Jack Givens came to her house to help her with her basketball game.
But instead of getting a lesson on shooting hoops, the teenager claims Givens sexually assaulted her.
Five days would be pass before the teenager would report the alleged incident to police.
Yet, police say information gathered from the victim and from the home of Givens supports the victim's statement.
According to the victim, Givens forced her to perform oral sex and that the events took place in the swimming pool and bedroom of the girl's home.
Givens was arrested Monday at his Orlando home and then taken to the Orlando police station where he was officially booked on charges of sexual battery and lewd molestation.
After spending the night in jail, Givens was released on a $25,000 bond.
Orlando detective Sandra Cawn, "A very, very thorough investigation has been done. I've been working on this since it was reported last Wednesday."
In a news conference, detective Cawn talked about the evidence, including instant messages between the victim and Givens taken from given's laptop and computer hard drives.
Cawn says those messages include an apology for "the mistake he made" and promises not to do it again.
Cawn says Givens doesn't say what 'it' is, but that they have a good case.
Despite all that, Givens maintains he's done nothing wrong, pleading not guilty to the charges against him.
"My character and my reputation speaks for itself and that's basically all I can say about that."
Earlier Tuesday, Givens had this to say, "In the next couple of days it's going to be put to rest. The charges aren't true. These are very serious allegations and very concerning allegations. I just hope that in the next couple of days, this can be put to rest."
Givens has been an announcer with the NBA's Orlando Magic broadcast team for 15 years, but his rise to fame began in Lexington when he led the 1978 Kentucky Wildcats to the NCAA championship.
Givens and the alleged victim met in a basketball league where Givens is a coach and the victim a player on another team.
Meanwhile, the Orlando Magic issued this statement. "The matter is in the hands of the proper authorities and we are concerned for everyone involved. We have no further comment at this time."
