Relief pitcher J.J. Putz on mound for mariners against Yanks. Trailing 6-0 Seattle brought in Putz to pitch the top of the 8th. Mike Mussina throwing a 3 hit shutout seems to have found his form. Jason Giambi hit a two run homer in the 7th (his 7th this year).

Mike Mussina pitched eight innings for his fifth straight win over Seattle and Jason Giambi hit a two-run homer to lead the New York Yankees over the Mariners 6-0 on Saturday night. Mussina (3-4) improved to 16-5 against Seattle, defeating Gil Meche (1-3) for his first victory in five road starts this season. He held the Mariners to three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks, and Paul Quantrill finished the four-hitter. Jason Giambi added a two-out homer in the seventh, driving an 0-1 pitch off Ron Villone to right field for his seventh homer this season. A small group of fans jeered Giambi by chanting, "Steroids... Steroids" as he rounded the bases, a reference to his grand jury testimony in the investigation surrounding a San Francisco-area drug lab. Giambi has denied using illegal steroids. Reliever J.J. Putz pitched two perfect innings of relief for Seattle, striking out 5 of six batters he faced.
