  • The former First Lady turned 90 on Monday and was celebrating with the extended Bush clan at their home in Kennebunkport, Maine
  • Mrs Bush met her husband, George HW Bush, at a school dance when she was just 16. She recalled thinking that he was 'so beautiful'
  • The usually outspoken Mrs Bush said she plans to keep quiet during the 2016 race but not about son Jeb Bush who she declared was 'brilliant'

.
Former first lady Barbara Bush was surrounded by family on Monday as she celebrated her 90th birthday at the family's Maine compound.Mrs Bush told her granddaughter, presenter Jenna Bush Hager, in an interview for Today that she's had a great life with former president George H.W. Bush.
'I've been the luckiest woman in the world, truthfully. And I know it,' she said. Mrs Bush met her husband, George HW Bush, at a school dance when she was just 16. She recalled thinking that he was 'so beautiful'.
But unlike her husband on his 90th birthday, the nonagenarian quashed any idea that she would also be taking a skydive.

A gala was planned for Monday evening under a tent at St. Ann's Church, down the street from her summer home, with special musical guests singer-songwriter Amy Grant, Reba McEntire and Michael W. Smith.
During the interview with her granddaughter, Mrs Bush also shared memories of her first date with her husband, who borrowed a car with a radio just in case they wouldn't have anything to talk about.
'And he tells the world now that I've not stopped talking in 75 years,' she joked.
The couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary earlier this year.
The former first lady said she knew that she had a 'grandmotherly image' when she was first lady but was not fussed, as she preferred not to dye her hair so she could go swimming and play golf.
And her ever-present pearls, she said, were there to 'cover the wrinkles' but she joked that they were no longer working so well as 'you can't wear pearls all over your face'.
She also talked about her work as first lady after her husband became the 41st U.S. president in 1989.

She became known for visiting AIDS centers and hugging patients to reassure the public that the disease could not be contracted through touch.
The 90-year-old also started the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy which has raised more than $40 million.
Mrs Bush, long known for her outspoken nature and dubbed 'The Enforcer' by her grandchildren for her no-nonsense attitude, said she planned to keep quiet during the 2016 campaign.
However she added that she would not be keeping quiet about her 'boy', Republican frontrunner, Jeb Bush.
'I think he's brilliant,' she added.
Jeb Bush was among the family members gathered in the Maine resort to celebrate the big day along with his wife Columba.

.

He posted some pictures with his mom on social media and tweeted: 'My mom is one special lady. Over 1,000 people have already wished her a Happy Birthday on FB.'
Former president George W Bush and former first lady Laura Bush were also in attendance.
Jenna Bush Hager shared a picture from the celebrations on Instagram of her and her grandmother talking a stroll on the beach, with Mrs Bush using a walker and accompanied by her beloved dogs.
Her twin sister, Barbara Bush Pierce, was also present for the party.
Granddaughter, former model Lauren Bush Lauren, posted a picture from the family holiday retreat on Sunday evening of 'taco night'.
She attended the weekend of celebrations with her husband, David Lauren, son of designer Ralph Lauren.
Other friends also shared their birthday wishes including Bill Clinton, who tweeted: 'Joining all of America in wishing a very Happy Birthday to Barbara Bush! Love, Bill & the other kids.'

On her 90th, it was announced that her foundation and retailer Dollar General were partnering with non-profit organization X Prize for a $7 million global competition to create an app to boost adult literacy skills.

Bush said she hopes the competition will bring 'a radical breakthrough' that will help an estimated 36 million U.S. adults who read at the third-grade level or lower.
Mrs Bush said that parents' literacy level is a 'significant predictor of their child's future educational success, influencing generations to follow'.
The original X Prize was awarded 11 years ago for privately funded, suborbital flight. Since then, there have been other X Prize competitions aimed at spurring innovation.

" those Katrina victims should be happy living in the superdome, it's like a vacation for them"

if only she swallowed the night George was conceived.....imagine the lives that could have saved. Unfortunately W's disaster administration has over shadowed his fathers legacy....Sr seems like a decent, rationale thinking man.

grossly indecent? Surely you've seen much worse here regarding the current First Lady. But I understand you excuse those who make such comments. But the travesty was the stealing of the 2000 election....that could have prevented many unnecessary deaths as well. Katherine Harris, Jeb Bush, and sneaky attorneys ...they all have blood on their hands.

You are such a disgusting, pathetic pile of shit.

Note: GW Bush had absolutely nothing to do with anyone drowning during Katrina or being in the Superdome.

But of course facts don't matter to a simpleton like you.

Yep, grossly indecent. And another canard you often post, the 'stolen election'. That, and your 'war for oil' drumbeat makes you "Tails" on a coin where "Heads" is a Birther.

You just keep repeating dumb shit. It is so funny you think "Republicans say mean things about Dems" is responsive. You have the intellect of a 6th grader. Not only that, you actually believe President Bush had something to do with anyone being in the Superdome during Hurricane Katrina. You are so fucking dumb it is embarrassing.
