Hopefully the Mets won't provide too many opportunities for him to close out games.

mets just added putz to the pen to be the setup man..i gotta give the mets credit they are really addressing their main issue. doesnt get much safer than putz/k-rod closing the door for you in the last two innings.

I don't know enough about green to tell about his skills as a reliever, but mets still have some big holes in middle relief to get to those two guys. If your starter's out in the 6th, you need two innings out of those guys before you get to putz and krod. It scares me to hear Minaya say the bullpen job is already done because it's far from it.

we'll see what he does this year, but to be honest i'd take mo, papelbon, nathen, k-rod and putz over him to be my closer. those are the top 5 imo, and i'd probably put lidge 6th. putz when healthy is actually better than k-rod.

Where's 5-0 Sat or Jordan?

I'm right here. The Mets can have him, and I speak for all Angels fans in saying don't let the door hit you on the way out. K-Rod is an average closer at best, meaning, Met's fans youll understand this soon, you'll literally have to sweat everytime he takes the mound. 1-2 walks per save attempt is the norm. I think he will choke under the pressure of New York. He will hear the boo birds once he blows a save or two and his emotions will be his downfall.

Like Texas Tech the Angels run a brilliant "system", i don't care who you put in that position of closure he will get 45 + saves. Starters go 7 or 8 on an almost nightly basis. Don't think the Angels have had a complete game in about a decade. Mike Scioscia trusts his bullpen much more than other managers. You put Arredondo or even Shields in their for 2009, I'll even bet we will see an improvement.

Bottomline, K-Rod is severely overrated. Let's face it, the Angels aren't the Florida Marlins, we've got $$$, if we thought the single season saves leader of all time wasn't replaceable we would've signed him in a new york minute. lol.

those are my exact thoughts on K-Rod and I definitely don't see a positive career for him in new york. I'm willing to bet that putz may take the closer role at some point next season.

K-Rod is beyond overrated. He is not a top 5 closer.

That being said, they needed a closer and he was the best available.

Putz over Lidge??? Come again ... one good season for JJ (and not the most recent season). Lidge and Mo were the best closers in baseball last season, according to Baseball Prospectus ... and my own 2 eyes.

Now the Mets sign Putz to set up K Rod ... don't remember the last closer to be re-assigned to set-up duty who have suceeded. I know plenty who have not.

anyway you look at it...The mets made a SPLASH...getting the TWO best Closers available and now pair them up.....They now have the best 8th////9th tandem in MLB.....

Minya(I don't like the guy) but he gets a star for this....You lose wagner to injury and get Krod AND Putz...and give up Heilman>??>>

every year the yanks and mets fill their holes but time after time players that thrived with other teams come in with massive contracts and dont achieve the way they used to.

hard to give 100% of your attention and care to baseball when you live in NY and are rich beyond belief haha. NY rangers had the same problem before the cap era.

Yes, I would take Putz over Lidge any day. Not going to talk bad about Lidge because as I said I would probably have him rated 6th, but K-Rod and Putz are BOTH better in my opinion. You may disagree, that's fine. I would just take either over Lidge and that's just because I think both are reliable. I will say Lidge was the best closer in the NL last year, but there were several in the AL that were/are better.

Putz may be the third best closer in baseball when healthy after Mo and Papelbon. He has nasty stuff.

While Putz may be talented, Lidge has some of the filthiest stuff in baseball. I fully expect another 40+ save/sub 2.00 ERA season. Putz had 2 good seasons, Lidge has had 4 and his skills are much better.

We'll disagree .... let's check back in Sept 2009 and compare bullpen numbers.
