And the reason flu cases are so low is more complex than that. Not only were (1) extreme safety measures being practiced, but also (2) flu vaccinations were up & (3) “one respiratory virus can block infection with another through stimulation of antiviral defenses in the airway mucosa”. So those already infected with covid19 would have had a high degree of immunity against flu infection.

Covid19 wasn't around in previous years, so you can't compare it to those years & say it "skyrocketed" relative to them.
If extreme safety measures were not in place, then covid19 infections & deaths would have been way, way higher, like 10X worse. So those same measures which have suppressed the flu have also suppressed covid19. So they worked for both the flu and covid. However, since covid is far more infectious, etc, it has emerged as the more dominant of the two.
Testing was already done & vaccines deemed therefore relatively safe. So far so good. Israel, the UK, San Fransisco, etc, are approaching herd immunity. Millions of lives will be saved via covid19 vaccines, & millions more spared from hospitalization, ICU's, suffering & "long covid" (long term negative health effects).
