He may have issues, but he is an excellent talent evaluator if nothing else. And he will bring attention to FIU basketball that can only help attract higher end talent.
I expect Isiah to do really well at FIU and probably have them in the Tournament in 2 years.
How can you say he's an excellent talent evaluator? He acquired nothing but busts in New York and his drafting was the worst in the league IMO.
Do you follow basketball?
In his 4 years with Toronto he made the following 1st round draft choices Damon Stoudamire (rookie of the year), Marcus Camby (2nd pick), Vince Carter (5th pick) and Tmac (9th pick overall). You want to find me a GM in the last 15 years that made 4 straight first round picks with as much talent as these 4?
With the Knicks he selected Channing Frye, Nate Robinson and David Lee (last pick of the 1st round) in 2005. In 2006 the knicks lost out on the second pick of the draft because he was dumb enough to trade for Eddy Curry and his late round picks Balkman and Mardy Collins, while serviceable, they have not panned out. In 2007 he selected Wilson Chandler 23rd and he is turning out to be a very good player.
Anyone want to explain to me how someone can question Isiah's ability to scout talent? His main mistakes were trading for Curry and Marbury, and for that he deserved to lose his job, but he is track record of finding good young talent is not just good, its outstanding.
Again, this is FIU, there is no way they were going to find someone with Isiah's ability to find talent anywhere else.
Was he even in charge of drafting players with the Raptors? He wasn't the GM as far as I can remember...
Anyway, the teams he has been in charge of in some capacity and their records:
94-95 Toronto: 21-61
95-96 Toronto: 30-52
96-97 Toronto: 16-66
97-98 Toronto: 23-27
00-01 Pacers: 41-41
01-02 Pacers: 42-40
02-03 Pacers: 48-34
03-04 Knicks: 39-43
04-05 Knicks: 33-49
05-06 Knicks: 23-59
06-07 Knicks: 33-49
07-08 Knicks: 23-59
How good of a talent evaluator could he have been if the guys he acquired had exactly 1 season over 12 years where his team finished 3 or more games above .500?
For what it's worth, that record comes out to 372-580 or a 39.1% victory rate. Not what I'd think would happen from a guy so adept at scouting talent.
His talent evaluating skills have left the Knicks in shambles with a bunch of guys he overpaid and gave up too much for. I just don't see it...
The knicks were in shambles (and in cap hell) well before Isiah took over. he was asked to come in and win now which was impossible. They needed to rebuild which is something the organization only recently realized.
And we are talking about building a college program. Its not about being a great coach, its about recruiting talent. Isiah has a history of spotting talent and he will surely have an edge when he makes a visit to a high school kids home.
I agree with you about him helping the school out 100%. He'll get much better recruits just based on his name. I think he's much better at figuring out good scorers then building teams though.
