Johnson's season ends on career strikeout No. 4,875
SAN DIEGO — A few hours before his predetermined inning Sunday, in all probability the last of his decorated, 21-year career, Randy Johnson said he wouldn't be nostalgic on the mound.
"That's just not the way I'm wired," he said.
But preparations were made. Johnson's entire family traveled to San Diego for the game. His son, Tanner, was the batboy.
And Johnson's seventh inning served as a "This Is Your Life" summation of his career: A little wild, a little unpredictable, and some heat that made all the difference. The San Diego Padres tied the game with an unearned run, but the Big Unit darted a called pitch at the knees to slugger Adrian Gonzalez to end the inning.
It was the 4,875th strikeout of his career, second only to Nolan Ryan's major-league record of 5,714.
"I don't know what Randy's going to do, but he came back and showed he's still got stuff," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "The way he finished, a called strike to a great hitter "...
if he does end that way, it's a pretty nice way to end it."
Johnson, 46, tore his rotator cuff July 5 but was determined to end the season on his own terms. After returning Sept. 19, he had a 6.23 ERA in five relief appearances but struck out six in 41/3 innings.
