Their best pitcher lately has been Tomko. I believe the Padres have a chance. I have a feeling he is not 100%.

I live in the SF Bay Area and follow the Giants very closely and know them very well as I see almost every game. Schmidt following his first two starts after suffering his groin injury, although pronounced 100%, was definitely pitching tentatively and not following completely through with his pitches and therefore was hit hard. His third and most recent start, he started out tentatively once again and fell behind 2-0, but when the Giants gave him a 5-2 lead, he relaxed and was finishing off all his pitches as he had done prior to his injury. Even Mike Krukow, the Giants color commentator noticed the change during the game and mentioned it as well. In my opinion, he is fully healthy and with the Giants, not only leading in the Wild Card chase, but now currently only 2.5 games behind the Dodgers for the Division, expect Schmidt to perform well tomorrow.

Futhermore, the Giants entire starting pitching staff is now definitely picked it up a notch. Schmidt, Reuter, Lowry, Tomko, and Hennessey are all pitching solid. Lowry has a tough assignment tonight as Peavy has always been tough on the Giants.

Certainly not implying that the Giants will definitely win as the Padres come off taking 3 of 4 from the Dodgers, but SBC Park will be electric with Bonds sitting at 699 and the division and wild card races up for grabs. Just wanted to share my thoughts.

By the way, Fair Warning is on the money as Tomko and Lowry have both been superb as of late.

Best of luck to you.

Ted:

You may or may not know this but I think Lowry hasn't lost since before the all star break. Is that correct? Also I heard that the Giants turned down some nice talent to keep Lowry (trade talks) earlier this year. We don't get much bay area talk here in Alabama.

I was not aware that Lowry hasn't lost since the All Star break but was very pleased when he was recalled from Fresno when Jerome Williams got hurt. Lowry has a tremendous change up. Very much like Schmidt. He just doesn't have the fast ball that Schmidt has. But he pitches very smart for such a young man. And yes, the Giants, even though they needed a closer badly, would not part with their young pitchers and that decision is now beginning to bear fruit. Hermanson is doing a yeoman's job as their new closer after Herges burned out, but he still is not a true closer. The Giants have blown over 25 saves this year. Imagine what their record would be if they had a top notch closer. Suspect GM Sabean to go all out next year, giving up waiting for Nen to get healthy after two years and try and land a solid closer.

By the way, hope you and your family are all well and made it through Hurricane Ivan in good health and with no damage.

Yes Ted we are all doing great. We were without power for about 2 days but that was just a minor incovience compared to what some went through. Alabama was very lucky that Ivan wasn't as severe as first thought.

If the Giants had a solid penn ala LAD they would have to be the favorites to win the NL. AJ was a great pickup this offseason. Maybe next year they can get that closer that will help them get there.

Goodluck on your selections this weekend
