Good article by Sting on this.

http://www.gambling911.com/Panama-Online-Gambling.html

Christopher Costigan, Sports911.com

Some might find it difficult accepting doom and gloom forecasts pertaining to Costa Rica from a Panamanian official who has it in his best interest to see another nation's businesses relocate to Panama en masse. Forget the fact that he wishes not to use his real name (a la the rest of the online gambling community).

Then again, since the writing is already on the wall, most sports book operators are more prone to believe what was said in today's meeting with the gentleman who aspires to become Panama's president (and likely will) by the end of this decade.

He is, by some accounts, one of the most influential men in all of Panama. The official, who we will call Juan Valdez, wishes not to have his real name out there for public consumption, claiming a recent "smear campaign" in the local papers (reportedly orchestrated by a disgruntled sports betting company CEO) has threatened this gentleman's political future. He is also the final link and the main man behind Panama's first master license.

"There is no such thing as a master license," insisted Valdez. "Only licenses!"

In speaking with him further he alluded to the idea that the government of Costa Rica was looking to crack down on internet gambling operations in the very near future.

Coming from a man who wishes to remain in the shadows for whom we must assign the alias of Juan Valdez, this might otherwise be passed off as simple rhetoric. He is, however, a prominent figure in the Panama landscape with strong government ties and as we've already made mention of, this individual is being groomed to become the President of Panama following the next election in 2009.

"When October comes, the (Costa Rican) government is going to hit them (the sports books operating there) real hard right in the middle of football season."

October represents the time for tax collection and license expirations in Costa Rica.

"I say with 50/50 accuracy this is going to happen."

It's what he did not say that was most telling.

Valdez assured us he has close friends within the Costa Rican government who provide him information. He did seem more than 50 percent certain of his prediction and quite specific in regard to the month of October.

"People in the Costa Rican government are telling me that they have to get rid of this industry (offshore sports gambling) and the President of Costa Rica is quoted as saying verbatim 'If I could shut them off tomorrow I would."

The only thing standing in his way is the Libertarian Party, which Costa Rica President Abel Pacheco refers to as hypocrites for their "moralistic" position while at the same time "holding a deck of playing cards in their hands".

"The guy is a moralist and he does not believe in this industry," Valdez commented. "While Costa Rica knows that sports books leaving will hurt their employees, they figure that an emerging tech industry will replace these jobs quite soon."

Valdez also informed us that Costa Rica is currently negotiating a TLC (Trade Agreement) with the United States.

"This is something to keep in mind when October comes as the U.S. will make requirements of Costa Rica."

According to Valdez, the Costa Rican government is furious that only a handful of the known sports book operators in that country signed up for a gaming license, let alone pay the required one year fee.

"For them, that was the last straw," Valdez claimed.

But isn't Panama participating of the trade agreement?? The same bs will apply once Panama's and US negotiators sit on a table.

Most books will be closed with new laws passing soon. They will have no choice and no one wants the US gov't on their back especially these days/ This will be our last season ever betting on the internet. It is all over.

Costa Rica's Sportsbook licenses don't expire in October.

What is Sting's agenda against Costa Rica anyways? Is it that he has been offered commissions to get sportsbooks to Panama or what?

Another gem by Sting. By now it seems the forums are divided in two groups:

1.Those who choose to believe whatever Sting has to say

2.Those -including me- who believe this guy's articles lack of all professional ethic.

Let's sum it up, Sting says he knows a guy. This guys is "a prominent figure in the Panama landscape with strong government ties". This guy named "Juan Valdez" -real name disclosed for the sake of his political career- says there is 50/50 chance that "the (Costa Rican) government is going to hit them (the sports books operating there) real hard right in the middle of football season".

From that point on, the rest of the article is SPECULATIVE at best. Let's see what substance can we find in this:
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>People in the Costa Rican government (as far as I know he could be talking about the janitor in some obscure CR institution)are telling me that they have to get rid of this industry (offshore sports gambling) and the President of Costa Rica is quoted as saying verbatim 'If I could shut them off tomorrow I would."(so the C.R president is willing to lose over 10,000 employements, especifically now when he needs the mone the most)<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

For one, Sting is asking us to believe there's a guy in Panama, who will run for president in that country. When? Sometime within the next 10 years. OK. Let's say the guy DOES exist; Sting had the "privilige" to talk to this guy and get "inside" info on the Costa Rican government. Inside info from a guy that is not even Costa Rican. What would be the only thing that would bring credibility to Sting's statments? Well, that the guy is a well connected politician in Panama. OK. You see guys? It makes perfect sense

BTW, Panama would LOVE to offer an alternatative solution if/WHEN all the Costa Rican books fled, having being kicked in the ass by Abel Pacheco, president of Costa Rica. Let's stop for a minute and think: WHAT'S BEHIND THE OFFER OF THE PANAMENIAN GOVERNMENT? Just the good will of men who would love to assist a brother in need? Or would it that these guys have financial interests?

So let's say the guy is real. Let's further assume Sting got to talk to him. Let's also believe -not because we're naiive, but because we wanna humor this guy today- this guy has "friends" in the Costa Rican governement.

Why would somebody related to the government of Panama -or at least soon to become president- HAVE ANY credibility about this issue? Am I the only one that sees the conflict of interests?

I got one word for you guys: MONEY.

<LI>Why would we believe anything from a Panamenian, in case the dude really exists; when the government of Panama would be the beneficiary #1 of a potential exodus of books from Costa Rica?

<LI>In case that this dude actually exists and that he indeed has friends in the CR government, why would these CR politicians disclose a plan of action that would instantly give an enormous advantage to their most inmediate "competitors" to start perceiving the so beloved bookie bucks? Wouldn't that be like handing the condom to the hung guy who's willing to buttfvck you? I have never heard of a government that is willing to admitedly get fvcked. Odd thinking there, Sting.

The following is a list of facts, that stand in open contradiction to some of the points presented by Sting:

<LI>"The guy is a moralist and he does not believe in this industry"-- As much of a moralist as Pacheco can be, remember MONEY TALKS. I know of no one who would be willing to lose a revenue of this magnitude just BECAUSE.

<LI>Valdez also informed us that Costa Rica is currently negotiating a TLC (Trade Agreement) with the United States.

"This is something to keep in mind when October comes as the U.S. will make requirements of Costa Rica."
-- The only reason this has not come true has nothing to do with this industry, but rather with the fact that the CR Market still believes in protectionist policies, favoring CR farmers and producers over the US producers.

That's a LONG ASS thread, I believe CECIL said it all, briefly and concisely:
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR> I wouldn't want to have a book here. BUT, Sting is pumping Panama just like this site.

Propaganda... <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Peace out people. Read, think and draw your own conclusions.

Sting is the most blatant example of a writer that can be bought for a price. How many times did he warn people about Australian books? How many times did he take shots at Antigua or Curacao? You need a scorecard to keep track of who is his sponsor this week, but many times I have read his articles and shook my head thinking "he can't really think that guy didn't have an obvious agenda to pursue". He gets quotes and advice from some rather dubious sources so fair warning to all...
