Is it really true that Las Vegas will NEVER have a professional sports team to call its own?

I read that article about David Stern and how he should lighten up last week, and it made me think that with the population explosion that it has to come some day. I spoke to a couple of people who say that the NBA, NhL, MLB, and NFL all hate the gambling and will never ever allow it. I have to think that there has to be some compromise in the future allowing some sport to come in. As the population in Vegas reaches 2 million something has go to give. there have got to be too many powerful people in vegas who want it. I know that when I come to Vegas it would be a nice treat to watch a professional sport for once as opposed to blowing all of my money at the Crazy horse 2.

It'll happen in the not-too-distant future. But there will probably be a few close calls before it's a done deal as Vegas becomes a candidate and gets nosed out

The gambling aspect is a big hurdle, but as casinos pop up more and more all over the country, the issue will lessen (heck, the WNBA has a team playing in a building attached to the Mohegan Sun Casino).

The other problem right now is that we don't have a major-league-caliber stadium for any sport (I guess the Thomas & Mack could be a temporary home for an NBA or NHL team), so it would be tough to have a team relocate here instead of going elsewhere that they could start playing immediately.

But as the population approaches 2 million, and with all the visitors we have, I think it's an inevitability. My guess would be an NHL team first just because the league isn't as sound as the others and would have less leverage in pressing the gambling issue, and would be less likely to pass up a sweatheart deal.

Hockey in the desert? Well, not too long ago, who would have thought that the NHL would have franchises in Phoenix, Anaheim and Florida?

The NBA, NFL, and MLB have NO, N-0, chance of ever landing a team in Vegas!!

Way to many negative factors.

As Tuley pointed out, the NHL is the only league of the BIG FOUR that has even a remote chance of landing a fanchise in Sin City.

tuley - doubt it would be the NHL.

with the league in the shape it is in - and with talk of there being fewer teams after the new CBA is signed - doubt they would "kill" teams then move another one to vegas.

of the 4 major sports - we know there is NO WAY the nfl would move there. i said why i don't think the nhl would move there.

that leaves the nba and mlb. you know better than i do - but the way i understand things - vegas is a "lakers" town - and it will be hard to break that - so any nba team would really struggle to draw fans - and since tark left - unlv hasn't drawn well at all.

that leaves MLB. right now - the only place to play would be cashman - a place dave cokin rips so many times on the sunday stardust show it gets to be humorous. of the 4 major sports - i could see a MLB team in vegas first - and probably only.

winky...first off, that's why I didn't even bother to mention NFL...they're doing everything they can to distance themselves from Vegas and gambling (even as far as refusing to take ads for Vegas) that you know the NFL won't be coming here in our grandchildren's lifetimes.

NBA is another longshot, though Mark Cuban and the Maloof brothers have been very vocal lately in their insistence that an NBA team in Vegas would be a huge success. It certainly would be the No. 1 destination of free agents!

As for Cashman, I agree with Cokin...and the 51s are moving out to Henderson anyway. On that front, though, Caesars Entertainment has mentioned the empty land behind the Paris Hotel (back to Koval Lane) as a potential site for a baseball stadium...again, though, even if they broke ground today that would take a minimum of two years and you know they won't just build a stadium with a deal inked for a tenant.

Even if the NHL contracts, I could still see a team owner who isn't succeeding in another city being interested in making a go of it in Vegas, especially if he gets help with a stadium and other perks (and, oh my god, I can't think of a better city for a team owner -- especially of the only pro team in town -- to get spoiled in than Las Vegas...he'd never have to buy a drink or meal again).

You need a termination date for the bet so the winners can collect, so let me assist you if I may.

WILL ONE OF THESE LEAGUES HAVE A MAJOR LEAGUE FRANCHISE IN SIN CITY BY DEC. 31st, 2010:

NHL.................... 4-1
MLB................... 15-1
NBA ...................25-1
NFL.................... 5000-1
NO TEAM WILL BE THERE.. 1-9

The above is for news and recreational purposes only.

Nice rewrite, Fishead. Of course, I should have had NFL 1,000-1 instead of 1-1,000...thanks for not busting my balls on that brain lapse.

IF I was booking it, I would make the termination date Dec. 31, 2015, just so I could earn interest on the money for longer. I'm sure this thread will be "bumped" to the top in a few years.

We shall see.

This all depends on your definition of "professional". Some of Tark's UNLV basketball teams with Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon, Greg Anthony, Anderson Hunt etc. probably met most people's definition of "professional"!!!

The most entertaining professional sports franchise in the years I lived in Vegas were the CFL LAS VEGAS POSSE!

I trully enjoyed the game and the team but the residents of Las Vegas didnt agree with me and attendance sank every game from the opener.

I attended every home game and had a blast.

Some very very good players in that league, do not kid yourself one bit.

The POSSE big star was Tamarick Vanover at the time.

take this for whatever it is worth.

The city of Las Vegas is currently in negotiations with a very prominent group to move the Expos to Las Vegas.

The potential ownership group has already presented stadium plans to MLB. The stadium would be a publically financed stadium on the vacant lot behind ballys/paris as previously mentioned. The stadium would be a retractable dome with some features that no other stadium in the world currently has.

The team would probably not be in the desert for 3 years -- if the team was sold it is likly that all of the teams games would be played in PR.

Five cities, including the favorites of DC and Portland, are working on getting them. I think Vegas has no shot at them. Baseball won't work right now not because of the gambling, but the population and TV market are too small. Even on the Strip I don't think more than a couple thousand tourists a game will go to see a team. Baseball just isn't a tourist draw and you need a lot of dedicated fans to patronize it. The lack of good revenue sharing for TV also limits it. This is clearly evident in the markets baseball is in. The smallest is Milwaukee, a market that is a little bigger than Vegas right now, but of course will be passed as growth continues. Portland is a smaller market than Vegas so that might be the only thing working in its favor. So many people want a team in DC that I can't believe that Angelos will be able to keep it out forever. Vegas is only ready for an NHL or NBA team right now. I am guessing by 2012 there will be an NHL team. I agree the CBA issue will kill the game for a few years and then after that one of the Canadian teams will finally cry out uncle and move south creating further uproar in Canada and the fan base. Las Vegas Flames even sounds appropriate

Kapper...we've been hearing that story on and off. It's certainly intriguing (and at least encouraging that representatives have come to Vegas twice to at least give it some rationale throught), but as I said above -- and echoing WildBill's comments -- I don't think Vegas is quite there yet. One fear is that, just like a couple of years ago when the Vancouver Grizzlies were moving, Vegas tried to throw its hat in the ring and basically was used as a pawn to drive the price up for Memphis. I can see that happening with the Expos. DC or Portland will probably get them, but will have to pay a premium.

But, what the hell do I know...I would love to be proven wrong on this scenario.

Las Vegas (like other cities in the past and present) is being used as leverage against other cities to extort tax money to subsidize
billionaire's toys.(new stadia and facilities for their teams).
Las Vegas will never have a major league baseball team in the forseeable future(15 years at least). It won't support one through attendance and its populace isn't stupid enough to have their taxes raised to subsidize one.
I don't think the prosepects for the other sports are much better IMHO.

There is no need for public funding for a stadium here. Either a casino will build it as part of their complex or will ante up a lot of sponsorship dollars for an arena. The baseball stadium would cost more, but honestly I just don't see a team coming. It seems even outrageous to think about. You have to build a very expensive dome to do it, roof required with the summer weather.

As for the stadium issue, the Harmon-Koval site does not seem big enough to me for a stadium and parking. But, the monorail would certainly be VERY convenient to it. And it would be like 3 minutes from where I live. Plus, the walkup traffic from the heart of the Strip could be incredible.
Even though, I see this as a long shot like most others, that location is VERY intriguing and much more preferable than one of those downtown Goodman ideas. I mean can you imagine the Skybox revenues with all the casino comps floating around???
