as long as it turns out to be a good fight, i really don't have a beef with the head gear. maybe with head gear on those guys will be less scared to take a punch and we the viewers can get more slugfests.

I'm curious, if Rocky wanted to fight Apollo could they both agree to head gear today? Is it a dead set rule against?

not sure. a rocky/ apollo would definitely sell a hell of a lot of tickets. What would the spectators want? on the other hand maybe balboa and creed could convince the boxing commission, after all it would be a major event

I don't see it, as viable option. In the old days it was bare knuckles, in the 70's 15 rounds, I hate draws, in any sport.. I'd prefer extra rounds in boxing, instead of a draw.

You box, you win or lose, IMO. You may die in your quest. No draws in any sport. Let the best warrior win ! The inferior warrior may quit.

i must disagree doug. we've come a long way since the old days of fisticuffs. the main concern of any true sporting commission or organization should be the safety of its athletes. head gear may not be necessary, but 15 rounds of head pounding is quite exessive. lots of damage can be done in just four and six rounders (eg. butterbean...wouldn't want to go one round with that beast)

Maybe too much Rocky month on ESPNC for me, but I'm 1/4 Klingon. I still hate ties ! I'd arm wrestle a BJ dealer for a push, as long as J-man ain't the dealer !

very true dougj...i really hate ties in boxing. i would prefer they toss a coin at the end of the bout to determine a winner.

Come on Pete that takes away from the bout in my opinion. It would also change the way bouts are priced and fought as well. Nothing like betting against a boxer with a glass chin, that head gear might actually help him.

Whats next, bubble wrap for the ribs?

BZ...: Tossing a coin is ludicrouos. That is so inane , as to be ridiculous. That's worse than present system. What warrior would accept that ? I'd prefer a draw to that.

There won't be any head gear in professional boxing. Fans go to fights, watch them on pay per view, cable and rare network telecasts to see two guys beat the hell out of each other. That may sound barbaric but it's true. The fans want to see a good beating by either or both fighters and headgear would take away a lot from the brutality of boxing.

It's a bit like the recent talk in Califorina of requiring porn actors to wear condoms. The porn industry will never go for that because people don't want to buy or rent pornos with actors wearing raincoats. Would headgear make boxing safer? Yes. Would condoms make the porn industry safer? Yes.

Neither one will happen. It's all about economics.

doug, it is absolutely ridiculous and ludicrous to toss a coin. i just get so frustrated hearing the ring announcer call a draw after ten or twelve rounds of a seemingly one sided fight.

A furthur thought. Only one extra round would be needed to decide a draw. With 3 judges, and 10-9 , or 10-8 rounds. The only way I can see a draw after an additional round, is if one judge called it 10-8 for fighter A, and the other 2 judges ruled it 10-9 for fighter B.

Has there ever been a round scored that way ? I hope not !
