Dennis Hoper, in all due respect, is not a "best actor working today" nor is Eastwood. Gran Torino is ok but Blood Work was crap. They're a couple of the best but don't apply to the thread title.
As good as The Insider is (and it is my favorite Crowe movie) I believe his best performance to be in A Beautiful Mind. Second, for me, is Romper Stomper. This was American History before there was American History X.
My three favorite "character actors:" Stephen Graham (This Is England, Snatch, Boardwalk Empire, Public Enemies), Michael Shannon (Bug, Revolutionary Road, Boardwalk Empire) and Ray Winstone (The Proposition, The Departed, War Zone).
Sam Rockwell is a fantastic actor and really shined in Moon.
For me, Brad Pitt continues to gain steam with performances like Curious Case of Benjamin Button & The Assassination of Jesse James. His early resume is fantastic also with Fight Club, Se7en, 12 Monkeys, & Kalifornia.
Much love Seymour-Hoffman. He's crushed every role he's been in (from Boogie Nights all the way through Doubt and Before the Devil Knows You're Dead).
My favorite up-and-comers: James Franco, Casey Affleck, & Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Hopkins I put up there with Nicholson, Pacino, and De Niro. They've proven all they need to, so it gives them a pass, but they've been mailing it in for years.
