Rookie of the Year in 1996, 10 time All Star, 2 time Gold Glove Award winner, lifetime batting average of .317 or about 50 points higher than your average shortstop, lifetime OBA of .387, or about 40 points higher than your average everyday *player*, forget shortstop, steals 23 bases a year, tommorrow becomes the all time hit king for any player that ever wore a Yankee uniform, and did I forget to mention, is the captain of the last baseball dynasty with four (and probably five in six more weeks) World Championship rings.

For those who are about to argue Jeter is an atrocious defender, you either a) don't watch much baseball, or b) are baseball ignorant.
Jeter has limited range,(so did Larry Bird on the basketball court) there is no arguing that, but rarely, and I mean rarely does Jeter not make the play when fielding the ball.
He will never make a mental error on he field, he is the master of the jump throw from short left field, always knows the situation, puts team over individual, and in my mind is the greatest SS in the modern era.

Ripken had basicly the same range as Jeter and was considered an average defensive SS, hit 40 points lower for his career than Jeter, had a very ordinary OBA of .340 has hit more, but not significantly more homeruns than Jeter, and he hit from the power position from the lineup.

No denying that Ripken was a great ambassador to the game, but was not Jeter's equal.

As a yanker hater it is hard for me to say this......but.......if there is such a thing as a born winner..it is jeter.........If I were to start a team......taking todays players at the prime of there careers.....I would start with Jeter and go from there...throw all the power stats out the window........put him at SS and build.........over any one last 20 years

.throw all the power stats out the window........
Keep them in the window, I have no problem with my SS hitting 17 taters year in and year out, from the top of the order yet.

Since shortstop is an important defensive position and there have been studies by Bill James and others suggesting that Jeter is one of the worst defensively of all time, I would have to say HELL NO!!!

You cannot possibly call a below-average defensive shortstop one of the greatest all-around shortstops of all time.

Many other fielding statistics outside of James' have rule Jeter a terrible fielder.

Cal Ripkin didn't have great range but his anticipation of where the ball was going to be hit is far above Jeter's.

Once again....I hate to defend anything yankee......but...I have watched a ton of jeter games.........and I have yet to see him cost his team a game playing shortstop in his 14 years.............................

fuck bill james

give me a winner over A FRAUD anyday of the week.

Heck.....needing a single with 2 outs in a tight game..I would rather have jeter.........or even ekstein up over A FRAUD.........his numbers mean shit.....he has no heart

Jeter...best of his ERA.........hands down.......a winner:toast:

Greatest all around SS? Yes, no question.

And you are right, IMO, Bill James is a f'cking clown. I bet you sabrematricians that Theo and the Roid Sox would've loved to have Derek over any of the SS they've had the past 15 years.

#2 in your program, #1 in your heart.

Not to mention the roster of pussy he's accumulated over the years.

Yount , Larkin , and Ripkin are ahead of him on your "list"....

Angels will take out NYY in the playoffs this year like they do every few of the past years and certainly in the regular season...

its so true. his little black book is like a collection of some of the hottest girls in the world.

and yess he is the best all around shortstop in the game right now, but not the best all time. i also think leadership is very important when talking about a shortstop on a playoff team. the leaders of any baseball team should be catcher(obvious reasons with the pitcher), shortstop (controls the infield), and center (controls out field). i find it very hard to think of a better leader the jeter. not to mention hes clutch and consistant.

I'll take the objective studying of some baseball lab rats over a bunch of degenerate gamblers who see with their wallets. And the naked eye says that Jeter has the range of a dead cow, especially to his left...

A follower of those guys-and, btw, a follower who is in a small market-has little to do with the principles that they follow. Btw, is Cashman-he of the biggest payroll by far but whose team takes up the ass every October, if they get in at all-the greatest GM of all time?

Jeter made his 2,610th career start at shortstop, passing Omar Vizquel for the most in major league history.
