underdeveloped = yes we are

The problem we've been having lately is that we are on the 'top' of the underdeveloped and under some metrics this excludes us from receiving help from many sources. Some of the EU countries (I don't remember which) cut us off by saying that we didn't need them

When you look at the underdeveloped countries you will see that we have many things in our favor that would allow us to improve

a) much better access to education
b) no army>>no spending on that crap
c) peace (definided as lack of problems with other countries...we do have our big problems of petty theft etc)

we need some coordinated movement that will make it clear that (someday) we will be a developed country. It obviously won't happen overnight but when you see some improvements in 'action' you can foresee a better future. For now, I see us 'stuck' OR slowly moving backwards as some things that were built/implemented a while ago start to deteriorate.

I guess that for now I will settle with a) no wars (unlike all our neighbors from here to Mexico) and hopefully b) less crime

Costa Rica is a third-world country, but not in the 'traditional' way.

Many people think of third-world countries as countries where there is natural hunger or widespread disease, lack of stable government/economy, etc...

I feel Costa Rica is only third-world because of its people.

Costa Rica has everything it could need to become a "first-world" country. It has an abundance of natural resources, it has no army, it's conveniently situated for trade, a solid health care and education system; the list can go on.

The culture and mindset of Ticos is what's holding it back IMO. Firstly, they are overrun from top to bottom with corruption and greed. They need to stop the influx of Nicaraguans, Colombians and others who only cause problems and scare away tourism. They need to gain a sense of pride and ambition, instead of the "pura vida" laid back attitude/approach. They need to get out from under the heavy religious (95% Catholic?) influence.

I could go on and on but I think my point is made.

'Various' is pretty much correct.

When you see guys working on the roads etc you don't see them thinking 'wow lets do a great job' instead of 'lets get by with the law of minimum effort and relax'

as a Tico myself I cant imagine how we can get out of this mentality, when you do a great job its not like you are encouraged in any way

we are very individualistic (does this word even make sense in English?) and this means we are all on 'our own/screw the rest'

we need a massive mental makeover because to start with....no Tico is going to like hearing stuff like 'you are a loser because your work is shit' EVEN IF its true, we need to disconnect the emotion and translate it into action

in the mean time, no more taxes, ZERO bribes and no tolerance to crime

If there were No Sportsbooks, Costa Rica would be a REAL 3rd world Country !

I used to think like that, but am not so sure now. The SB money isnt hurting the present so much but more likely than not it IS wrecking their future as these books would pull out tomorrow if they found out that coke, hookers, and bribes were cheaper in Nicaragua and then were gonna be stuck with a bunch of unemployed ticos that are used to easy money.

Costa Rica is a 3rd world country that's been given every opportunity to advance and has repeatedly pissed them away. Determined and persistent failure is the only way I can describe it.

For decades, foreigners have come here either retiring or for tourism. Bringing several times the organic GDP every year and Costa Rica has found a way to keep the place broke and dysfunctional. A protectionist economy makes getting a good steak almost impossible and decent cell phone reception something that only happens in other places.

Over the centuries, mankind has evolved through the process of natural selection. Meaning some people who were not fit to remain in the gene pool walked off cliffs, tried to eat live rattlesnakes, etc... Somehow, this population managed to escape and is now governing this country.

Third world refers to developing and underdeveloped countries that were not aligned with the United States and it allies (1st world) nor with Soviet Russia and the communist bloc (2nd world) during the cold war.

There isn't really any qualification process to ever get removed from the category of "third world".

The term second world was been largely replaced by the term BRIC (Brazil, Russian, India, China); which I guess leaves the former Eastern communist bloc countries joining the first world (particularly those joining the European Union) or third world (which many certainly are).
