World Number One said:hey winky , would their be guys show up on sunday to watch all the football games even if they were not scheduled to work ?
i gotta believe that place is the best for watching games.. all those monitors everywhere .
and do the seasonal guys just stay in hotels when they come to town for their weekend jobs ? or do they rent a place for 6 months ?
winkyduck said:i worked almost every sunday i was there - so for me - it was nothing new. most people there wanted to get as far away from the place when they had a rare day off so coming in on an offday to watch football wasn't something many did - mostly because you were afraid they would spot you and ask you to work a few hours since they were short-handed and needed bodies - and thus you didn't get to watch a lot of football as is. the cool part of it all was because the NFL people were there all day they had a nice spread for them starting @ 1P when the pre-game show ended. those who were working on Primetime or watching a game were allowed to go in and get first shot at it but come 2P whatever was left over was FAIR GAME and open to anyone there. needless to say come 2P there were quite a few people there digging in - including me (WHAT A SPREAD this is, too). The Primetime guys all go into a room and watch EVERY game on so they can see every play that happened and be able to comment on it. The room is huge and as you can imagine has a TON of TVs there. i was never in there to watch with the crew but i have been in the room and it is AWESOME!
as for the seasonal guys (Primetime, BBTN, College Hoops, etc.) there is a Clarion Hotel (Used to be a Radisson) RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET from ESPN and ALL of the people stay there since they can walk to ESPN in less then 5 minutes and in the winter time when it is cold - getting shuttled across the street minimizes the risk of anyone NOT being able to make it to the place. my guess is ESPN rents out "X" rooms for the entire year - this way they get a better rate. now - i'd be shocked if the "big names" stay under their own name - but i can promise you Steve Young, Michael Irvin, Tom Jackson, etc. ALL stay at the Clarion across the street in Bristol.
I'll never forget the night after a BBTN we went back to Billy Sample's hotel room (He did BBTN then) and when we (about 10 of us) got in he went to the bathroom and pulled open the curtain to the bathtub and showed us the thing was FILLED with Ice and about 50 bottles of Beer (I SWEAR this is 100% true) and by the time i left about 2-3 hours later almost all of the beer was GONE (and I don't drink beer!). There was one on-air personality there who drank his fair share (NO - I will NOT say who it was)
