Sox are winning, losing or if game is tied.
To be honest, even though it is a ritual which really serves no purpose, I kind of like the song and don't get tired of hearing it when they play it.
Also, in the offseason when I hear it played on the radio, I do like it as it reminds me of the baseball, the Sox and the season to come,
which are all by far my strongest passions when it comes to sports.

I just looked it up, and it turns out that they started playing it in 1997 at times for good luck for the Sox, but that it didn't become tradition
