A friend of mine was audited in mid Feb. since then i have basically paid his living expenses. ive seen documents and he's signed promissory notes and given me ultimated power of attorney which im still waiting on the irs to process. he has shown me documents(all documents look like something off microsoft word) that have 3 or more different dates on when his case was solved. and most recently he told me that they were sending a check on december 20th. how long can an audit last and Ultimately is the guy full of shit?

An audit can last an extended period of time, depending on issues and circumstances and auditor's workload and taxpayer's cooperation.

It doesn't appear to me that you have authority to represent the client in front of the IRS, otherwise you can ask them questions yourself.

All correspondence from the IRS would be on IRS letterhead with contact names and numbers.

If he's claiming that a refund is pending, have him call and check the status of his refund with you on a conference call or speaker phone.

Good luck

willie 8821 and 2480 i believe these are the forms, these give me power of attorney with the irs i also have an executive poa with this person. the 2 forms are still being proccesed. ive requested the conference call and there is always a bs reason on why it isnt done. this is why i have put a poa and the 2 irs forms in play bc i cant seem to get anywhere with this individual. the part that confuses me the most is supposedly there was a check mailed on the 20th of dec, its now jan, 8 how long does a priority mail check take to arive? 2 days? just nothing makes sense w the matter. i will be talking to the irs on the phone later today will post any updats. thanks everyone who replied

Form 2848 is the POA before the IRS. However, to be eligible, you must be either a CPA, an Attorney an Enrolled Agent or a paid preparer that signed the tax return in question.

Sounds like you're making progress.

Unless you're a "qualified person", as described in a prior post, you can't.

Two options:
1) conference call with your freeloader buddy
2) have him give POA, Form 2848, to a CPA or Attorney you know and let them call the IRS.
