Iran rejects UN nuclear demands

Iran says no international body can force it to end enrichment
Iran has reacted defiantly to calls from the UN nuclear watchdog to suspend all enrichment activities and said it would not agree to halt them.
It will also block snap site checks if the issue goes to the Security Council.

"Iran will not accept any obligation regarding the suspension of uranium enrichment," chief nuclear negotiator Hassan Rohani said.

Uranium enrichment can be used to make nuclear weapons, but Iran says its programme is for peaceful purposes.

"If they want to send Iran to the Security Council, it is not wise, and we will stop implementing the Additional Protocol," Mr Rohani told a news conference in Tehran.

This demand is illegal and does not put any obligation on Iran. The IAEA board of governors has no right to make such a suspension obligatory for any country

The Additional Protocol to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty allows snap nuclear checks.

"We are committed to the suspension of actual enrichment, but we have no decision to expand the suspension," Mr Rohani said.

"This demand is illegal and does not put any obligation on Iran. The IAEA board of governors has no right to make such a suspension obligatory for any country."

He said European countries were wrong in thinking Iran was only one step away from full enrichment; Iran was already at that point and could complete the nuclear fuel cycle "today" if it wanted.

And he added that, if Iran was referred to the UN Security Council for punitive action, it would consider pulling out of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty altogether.

Suspicions

Iran suspended enrichment a year ago as a confidence-building measure, but has continued activities such as building the centrifuges that refine the uranium.

The Board of Governors considers it necessary, to promote confidence, that Iran immediately suspend all enrichment-related activities

The US has strong suspicions that Iran is using its nuclear programme to make weapons in secret.

Along with Israel, it is pushing the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to refer Iran to the Security Council if it does not comply with the agency's demands. The Security Council could then impose sanctions.

"With every passing week, Iran moves that much closer to reaching the point where neither we, nor any other international body, will be able to prevent it from achieving nuclear weapons capacity," said chief US delegate Jackie Sanders on Saturday.

Nuclear experts have said the Parchin military complex, south-east of Tehran, may be a site for the research, testing and production of nuclear arms.

Iran says it has a right to enrich uranium as part of its peaceful nuclear programme, including power generation.

European rift

Iran also accused Britain, France and Germany of breaking an accord reached last year on Iran's co-operation with the IAEA.

"The three Europeans have violated the terms of the accord regarding enrichment because the suspension of enrichment was voluntary," Mr Rohani said.

In its resolution, the IAEA said its board of governors had judged that an Iranian promise made to the three European nations last year to suspend uranium enrichment activities had fallen short of expectations.

The resolution called on Iran to suspend all uranium enrichment activities and asked Iran to grant access to its inspectors.

The IAEA board of governors is next set to meet on 25 November to review Iran's alleged nuclear weapons programme.

Iran has until then to answer all outstanding questions about its nuclear programme.

The international community has a much better case for attacking Iran than it did for attacking Iraq. Having said that...diplomacy may still work.............

I can't see diplomacy being of any use.

The US no longer has diplomatic credibility for starters.
Plus things have been 'quiet' on the media front because of the upcoming election.
Yet another war without UN backing would be political suicide for the chickenhawks.

(Remember how the RNC in NY only had squishy girliemen types with squishy girliemen speeches.)

After the pre-emptive invasion of Iraq the only thing on your mind if you're an islamic dude is self-defence.

The alternative is to let the US into your country and wind up living in squalor in an infrastrucure wasteland like the Iraqis.

If I was Iranian.
I would be piling every resource I had into getting an operational nuclear device before December.

After December the sanctions/bombing and various 'self defence' 'pre-emptive measures' will begin.

I have to agree with eek here.....the Iranians best shot at this is to do it before the elections here.....nothing will be done before then because Bush won't stir things up in Iran before the election for fear of losing his precious second term....

.....after the elections the force currently in Iraq will be staring at a pile of weapons and all that ammo and be itching for someone to point the way to the next military conquest...

I have to admire Iran's honesty here...they could have easily pulled a 'North Korea' and lied about it for years but instead they give the US the big middle finger.

Call me a tad bit cynical when it comes to matters of "honesty"....

"Honesty" in the case of Iran, may get themselves invaded....where in the case of North Korea, they lied about it, and now they have the means to defend thier country from foreign invasion......

I doubt the US would be able to invade Iran. They are like an Afganistan (mountaneous) with a real army...motivated and ready to die for the Islamic Republic. Armed with nuclear weapons....the whole Middle East would go up in flames and i'll safely make my way to Brazil where i'll spend the rest of my life.

Would they invade Iran? Certainly. When was a non-US national border ever considered sovereign?

As far as able, as in being successful, I doubt it, with reference to the terrain factors you mentioned......but that doesn't stop armies invading considering the fact that a few people are giving the orders and thousands of other people are doing the fighting and the dying. It's pretty easy to start a war when someone else is going to bleed out in a foreign wasteland....

Why would Iran be much different from any other non-sovereign place on the globe? Maybe like you referred to, with the nukes they could actually defend themselves from imperialistic invasion forces.....

LMAO! It will be a real treat to see Germany, France and the hapless UN on this one. 29 resolutions later they'll be begging the US to do something. When a European city goes up in smoke you'll understand then and only then, too bad.

Keep talking to each other libs. It's a good source of humor for me.

When A2345exxx shows a muslims scum shooting a Jew I have to ask myself - Did the muslim scum run out of suicide bombs as well as children, women and shrines to use as shields now?

By the way, I had a face to face with a couple true military rednecks, and I mean rednecks, 'in the know' the other night. The US is doing more than ANY of us realize on this so called war on terrorism. More than GAMEFACE or Patriot or anyone else knows. Most not being reported.

W wins big. That means muslim scum lose big.

Can't wait to see the tears on those faces election night. Nothing is more pitiful and nothing so funny at the same time as that.

I'm curious as to what you mean by "true military rednecks"?
While redneck is a derogatory term, there's no implication that all soldiers are rednecks, nor that rednecks are soldiers.
