got an iphone a couple weeks after it was released and have absolutely loved it. I use it all the time every day and solved my problem of having to replace my old ipod as well.
the edge network is frustrating at times, wifi is pretty nice if u have a place to connect. and i have used the iphone with matchbook/bodog/bookmaker and it works.
The touch screen felt natural to me from the first day i bought it, I can type faster with the on screen keyboard than most physical keyboards like the sidekick.
If u email a lot, you might want to reconsider. If they release a better version of it i'd probably buy it as well, if it has 3g support at least.
