Ticket sales for Saturday night's Iowa-Iowa State wrestling meet went past the 13,000 mark Wednesday afternoon, which already guarantees it will be one of the top 17 crowds in NCAA dual meet history. Iowa officials are hoping for a record-setting turnout for the showdown between the top-ranked Hawkeyes and No. 2 Cyclones. Here are the top crowds in NCAA history:

Was in attendance in at least four of these matches......all involving ISU and IOWA.

The Hawkeye teams of the early 80's were simply awesome. In fact, coach Gables goal one year was to have his team win the national championship at EVERY weight class............lol.

Members of those teams included all-time greats Barry Davis, Ed Banach, Lou Banach, and Randy Lewis.

Barry was one of my closest friends at Iowa and is now the head coach at Wisconsin.

record will be set. 15,800 plus!!

The catchphrase inside Iowa's wrestling room leading up to last year's dual meet with Iowa State was geared toward taking something from the Cyclones.

By the time the Hawkeyes were finished ransacking through Hilton Coliseum, the list of items they had stolen included another victory in the series and the No. 1 ranking that previously belonged to Iowa State.

It was a monumental moment during Iowa's return to the top of a sport it dominated for more than two decades. But the top-ranked Hawkeyes seem to be in a more generous spirit entering Saturday night's 7 p.m. showdown with the No. 2 Cyclones at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Iowa isn't looking to take anything from Iowa State this time around. The Hawkeyes would prefer to send the Cyclones a memo instead -- one that indicates Iowa still is the team to beat.
"When you go step on the mat, you want to deliver a message because if we go out and do a pretty good job this weekend, it will make a difference come March," Iowa's top-ranked 149-pounder Brent Metcalf said. "We're aware of that, we're aware of that every time we step on the mat, no matter who we're competing against. We're going out there to deliver a message to them and the rest of the world."

More than 15,800 tickets had been sold as of Friday afternoon, guaranteeing the Hawkeyes and Cyclones will wrestle in front of the largest crowd in NCAA wrestling history. Iowa officials received approval to add 500 standing room spots around the rail at the top of the arena, pushing the capacity to 16,000 in an effort to break the record set in 2002 when Minnesota crammed 15,646 into the Target Center for a dual with the Hawkeyes.

"That's a tribute also to the guys who are going to be competing, the 10 weights we have, the (No.) 1 against 2," Iowa coach Tom Brands said. "Without a product, you don't generate the excitement. Winning is promotion, and we have to give fans a reason to come. Entertaining wrestling is promotion. Entertaining wrestling and promotion go hand in hand, and then you have a pretty good product. That's something that's communicated to our guys -- it's about how you go out and entertain, it's not just about getting your hand raised."
Brands said the crowd "adds to the fireworks."

"Your adrenaline gets going (in front of a big audience) and you feel like He-Man," Iowa's second-ranked 125-pounder Charlie Falck said. "You feel good."
The show on the mat should be quite a spectacle, too.
Both teams feature a line-up with six All-Americans, the Hawkeyes and Cyclones have 11 wrestlers ranked fifth in the country or better and the dual looks virtually even on paper.
Iowa is heavily favored at 149, 174 and 184. Metcalf beat West High product Mitch Mueller by a major decision at 149 in last year's dual. Iowa junior Jay Borschel, ranked second at 174, won by a major decision against Duke Burk, a Northern Illinois transfer, in their only previous meeting. The Hawkeyes also are hoping for big points from third-ranked 184-pounder Phil Keddy against freshman Jerome Ward.
"I think it's an important part of the dual meet -- getting those bonus points," Metcalf said. "I think there are a few matches where we can and it's important we get them. But really, if things go our way it shouldn't even matter. That's the perspective I take. We get bonus points because that's the style we wrestle and that's the attitude that we approach it. But if we do our jobs, it doesn't even matter if we have bonus points because we're winning those matches."

The Cyclones are clearly favored with All-American Cyler Sanderson at 157 and top-ranked Jake Varner at 197.
Barring a major upset, the outcome of the dual might hinge on which team pulls out a pair of victories in pivotal matches at 133, 141 and 165 -- a three-bout series that features five All-Americans.
Iowa hasn't declared a starter at 133 where Daniel Dennis or Joe Slaton will take on fifth-ranked Nick Fanthorpe. Slaton won a pair of close head-to-head meetings against Fanthorpe last year.
Third-ranked Iowa senior Alex Tsirtsis is set to take on No. 2 Nick Gallick at 141 and Metcalf's high school teammate, third-ranked Jon Reader, will face No. 9 Ryan Morningstar at 165. Morningstar has a history of success against Reader, but not at the college level. He won a pair of freestyle meetings and a Greco-Roman match in 2005 when they were both high school prospects.

Iowa has won 22 straight duals and the last three in the series against the Cyclones.
"I'd say there's a lot of dislike (for Iowa State)," Keddy said. "We probably hate them."
"They're trying to take something away from you," Falck interjected. "Like with any opponent, they want what you want and you don't want them to have it. I don't know if I'd necessarily call it hate, but you want the same thing and you don't want them to get it, you want it."
That's one reason why this isn't just an ordinary December dual for a pair of programs that have aspirations of finishing at the top in March.
"The way I approach competition in my life, checkers and Monopoly were important when you were playing them," Brands said. "Every match is important. Our guys know it, they love it, they rise to the occasion because they believe that for most of their lives as competitors and it's been reinforced here."

No. 1 Iowa vs. No. 2 Iowa State

• When: 7 p.m.
• Where: Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
• TV: Iowa Public Television will broadcast the dual live. The meet will be aired on the Big Ten Network at 9:30 p.m.
• Radio: KXIC 800-AM.
Probable matchups
InterMat records, rankings (Iowa wrestler listed first):

125 pounds
• No. 2 Charlie Falck (8-0) vs. No. 5 Tyler Clark (8-0): When it comes to attacking the legs of an opponent, Falck is about as good as it gets at 125 pounds. He doesn't always finish his shots, but he gives himself multiple opportunities. Falck's problems generally come against tall, lanky opponents who can prevent quick, clean finishes and have the ability to use their length and leverage to ride him.
Clark doesn't fit that mold. Couple that with a significant experience advantage for a fifth-year senior and two-time All-American against a second-year sophomore, and the advantage goes to Falck and the Hawkeyes at 125. But don't expect bonus points here.

133 pounds
• No. 11 Daniel Dennis (6-1) or Joe Slaton (3-0) vs. No. 5 Nick Fanthorpe (8-0): Perhaps the biggest mystery going into the dual is who the Hawkeyes will send to the mat at 133. There's really no reason for Iowa coach Tom Brands to tip his hand until it's time to send someone to the mat. He'll have Dennis and Slaton both ready to go while Fanthorpe will be left to prepare for two wrestlers with distinct styles. Though Dennis and Slaton both work off forward pressure, they employ different tie-ups to get to their shots. Dennis has more big moves in his arsenal, but Slaton leaves fewer openings for opponents to score.
Dennis has wrestled in seven of Iowa's eight dual meets while Slaton, a returning NCAA finalist, has worked to get his weight under control. Dennis is 6-1 with an overtime loss to No. 10 Steve Bell of Maryland. Slaton hasn't been razor sharp, but he is 3-0 and has a track record of getting up for big matches and a history of success against Fanthorpe -- Slaton won both of their matches last season.

141 pounds
• No. 3 Alex Tsirtsis (6-0) vs. No. 2 Nick Gallick (6-1): Tsirtsis was a freshman phenom in 2004 when he lost his first collegiate match after an undefeated high school career. The opponent was Nate Gallick and the top-ranked Cyclone's overtime win helped Iowa State to a 19-16 victory in the dual. Four years later, Tsirtsis is up against another Gallick in match that could be pivotal in the outcome.
Nate Gallick was one of the most consistent wrestlers in the country during his final three seasons with the Cyclones. His younger brother has been hot and cold at Iowa State, posting victories against some of the best wrestlers in the country and following those performances up by losing to guys who don't have his skills. When he's on, though, Gallick poses problems for his opponents with his defense and skills on top.
Tsirtsis must find a way to break through Gallick's defense and score a takedown or two to pull out a key match in the dual.

149 pounds
• No. 1 Brent Metcalf (8-0) vs. No. 10 Mitch Mueller (6-0): Iowa's best wrestler provides the Hawkeyes with their best chance for bonus points. Metcalf has five pins and two technical falls this season, including a 19-3 whipping of third-ranked Darrion Caldwell of North Carolina State. Those who attempt to get into wide-open, fast-pace matches against Metcalf typically break midway through the match and end up on the short end of a lopsided score.
Mueller, a West High product, isn't blessed with the great athleticism others at the weight class possess, but he's a smart wrestler and has the ability to slow down the pace by locking onto wrists and elbows. Metcalf, though, has ability to force his style. The Iowa junior won 14-4 and 10-4 in their two meetings last season.

157 pounds
• Matt Ballweg (6-2) vs. No. 7 Cyler Sanderson (2-0): Sanderson is one of the most exciting and aggressive wrestlers in the Iowa State line-up. He earn All-American honors at the NCAA meet last year in a loaded 157-pound bracket, beating Bloomsburg's Matt Moley 7-5 for seventh. Ballweg is the only wrestler in the Iowa line-up without previous experience in an Iowa-Iowa State dual while Sanderson has been victorious in each of his two matches in the dual series. Ballweg's last match was a 5-1 loss to Moley. All four of his bouts last week at the Journeymen Duals were low scoring. Sanderson will try to change that, run up the score and pick up bonus points for the Cyclones.

165 pounds
• No. 9 Ryan Morningstar (8-0) vs. No. 3 Jon Reader (8-0): This might be one of the most compelling matches of the night. Morningstar is undefeated after moving up from 157 and he seems to be finishing matches better than he did a year ago, although this will be his best test to date this season.
Reader is a product of the Davison (Mich.) High School program that also cranked out Metcalf. The sophomore is aggressive, physical and can exploit opponents who get sloppy in the top position. Reader has picked up bonus points in each of his last seven matches.
Although they have no previous history at the college level, Morningstar won a pair of freestyle bouts and one Greco-Roman match against Reader at the Junior level in 2005.

174 pounds
• No. 2 Jay Borschel (8-0) vs. No. 8 Duke Burk (2-0): Borschel's rapid surge in the rankings last year was fueled by his performance at the Midlands Championships, where he handled Burk -- then at Northern Illinois -- by a 10-1 major decision. Though he wasn't able to initiate much offense on his own in that match, Borschel never gave Burk an opening, scored on three counter takedowns, racked up nearly two minutes of riding time, a pair of backpoints and got away almost immediately when Burk had his opportunity on top.
Although Burk's decision to transfer in the offseason solidified one of Iowa State's weakest weights, this is still a spot where the Hawkeyes could be looking for bonus points.

184 pounds
• No. 3 Phil Keddy (8-0) vs. Jerome Ward (5-1): Ward originally committed to Iowa before giving Illinois a verbal and then eventually winding up with the Cyclones after winning two Illinois titles at Chicago's St. Rita High School. The freshman will be one of the three wrestlers in the Cyclone line-up getting a taste of the Iowa-Iowa State series for the first time. He'll be up against one of Iowa's most explosive wrestlers in Keddy.
The third-ranked junior has four falls this season. He has an assortment of pinning skills, using underhooks to get to bodylock positions from the feet and using arm-bar series to crank opponents over from the top. Here's another spot where the Hawkeyes might have an opportunity for bonus points.

197 pounds
• Luke Lofthouse (1-1) vs. No. 1 Jake Varner (7-0): Varner hasn't had any trouble adjusting from the move up a weight class after reaching the 184-pound NCAA finals in each of his first two seasons with the Cyclones. Although he was been remarkably steady the past two years, the knock on Varner was that he didn't win by large enough margins. That has changed so far this season. He has five falls, a major decision win against then-No. 2 Hudson Taylor of Maryland and hasn't allowed a point in his other matches. This is Iowa State's best bet for bonus points.
Lofthouse is the likely candidate to fill in for regular starter Chad Beatty, who sustained a knee injury last weekend at Central Michigan and will likely be out of competition until after Christmas. Lofthouse has experience in the series, wrestling at 174 for the Hawkeyes as a true freshman in 2004 before going on a Mormon mission. He'll try to limit the damage against Iowa State's best wrestler.

Heavyweight
• No. 16 Dan Erekson (7-0) vs. No. 2 David Zabriskie (7-0): This could be more entertaining than the average heavyweight match. Erekson and Zabriskie are big guys who grew into the heavyweight class and possess wrestling skills that many others at the weight do not. Erekson is tied with Metcalf and Borschel for the team lead with five pins. He has a dangerous arm-bar series he uses on top. The main issue for Erekson against Zabriskie could be getting in a position to utilize his skills on top. Erekson will need to create openings for his shots against a wrestler who is difficult to score against and likely won't wear down. Zabriskie, who placed sixth at the NCAA meet last year. The Iowa State junior won a 3-1 decision against Erekson last year at the Harold Nichols/Cyclone Open.

Wrestling....how boring...this thread is making me yawn.

Still, you have the desire to post.

If your not interested, who cares?

MANY people do, as wrestling is very popular at many Universities...............especially in Oklahoma, NY, Minnesota, Wisconson, and of course, Iowa.
