IOC looking into Chinese cheating after new evidence found

The International Olympic Committee has ordered an investigation into the age of Chinese gymnast He Kexin, The Times of London reports. Faced with almost insurmountable evidence which suggests that He is two years younger than the birth date listed on her Chinese passport, the IOC has launched an inquiry that could result in the stripping of He's gold medals.

This news comes on the heels of another Times report that details the findings of a New York computer security expert who found official Chinese documents that list He's age as 14 years and 220 days. Mike Walker used a Chinese search engine's cache feature to find He's actual date of birth on spreadsheets from a Chinese government website. The spreadsheets were taken down off the site recently and He's name had been removed.

Assuming the IOC is committed to a real investigation and not some dog and pony show, the revelation that the Chinese government covered up the ages of gymnasts could end up being the defining moment of these Games for the host country. Officials wanted the Olympics to be a coming out party for a new China. But while the Games have been a huge success, there is a legitimate possibility that China's legacy from Beijing '08 will be that of a massive government cover-up, not the magical Opening Ceremony or the transformation of Beijing or anything else positive.

All the good work China did to put on these Olympics could be forgotten because of an unnecessary, arrogant move by the government. Why risk everything to put a 14-year old in the competition when they could have replaced her with an of-age 16-year old gymnast? Sure, He is a better gymnast than the Chinese gymnasts who were eligible to compete, but with the judges they had at the Olympics, would it really have mattered?

I'd be willing to bet that this goes away and no one is stripped of any medals.

WNO the reason for the age limit may have something to do with what countries like China put these girls through... Just a shot in the dark I really don't know.

Love OTK chiming in in hopes that the US does not pull this gold medal. Never pass on a shot to dump on the american olympians in whatever way possible.

Why would I personally care who ended up with a gold medal, the Chinese or the Americans? I have no bias either way and really couldn't care less. Those two nations are both way above the rest of the world in athletics, and I have no problem with Canada being far behind them. How many medals my country gets in comparison to how many the Americans get really doesn't affect me. Btw, with all the bragging you've been doing about the Americans how many medals did you personally end up with? My guess is at least 20, all of them gold no doubt. Michael who? Uno is the real star of the Olympics!

Anyways, my point was this would go away, whether they cheated or not. China will make sure they don't look bad at their own Olympics. They'll make this go away, one way or another.

This is something that shouldn't be assumed.

I don't understand that either, especially when gymnasts are typically better when they are very young. Nastia Lukin (sp) from the USA is 19 years old and there were some comments from the announcer that there was talks that she might have been past her prime coming into the Olympics (obviously she put that to rest with her overall performance), but that just goes to show that if a gymnasts career is going to end so young, why can't they start at 13/14 if they have the ability to do so? Really makes no sense at all.

The excuse for having the minimum age set at 16 I've read over
and over is to prevent injuries:

"Gymnastics has dealt with age falsification problems since the minimum age of 14 rose to 15 in the 1980s, then to 16 in 1997, in part to protect gymnasts from injuries and to prevent burnout.
But there is a lure to skirting the rules. Younger gymnasts are often lighter, making it easier to perform certain tricks. Some coaches also believe that younger gymnasts are less fearful of injury."

I have no problem with changing the age limits to whatever - or
getting rid of them altogether. But, if you
want the rules changed, you appeal to have the rules changed, you
don't cheat.

The real reason for the age restriction is the younger gymnasts aren't as developed and are thus more flexible.

Really could care less myself, but that is the reason.
