Internet? Pay or Free??

I have been using Verizon DSL for a while now ($30 per month). If I get a wireless modem in my desktop, can't I just use the internet off my neighbors free of charge :103631605

. I do have hot-spots.

Most peoples connections are locked. If it's available there could be a good reason for it, keep in mind they will be able to tell what you are doing and can shut down their network at any time. Don't be cheap pay for it, you can get good service for Under $15 a month.

How do you tell if somebody is using your signal ?

easy way , would be to look at the DHCP leases that your router assigns (this is assuming that your 'leach' is using his card to "AUTO IP", he could simply figured out what subnet you use in your router and set a static IP in that range ,though)

complicated way, you fire up a packet analyzer and record every single packet that goes back/forth to figure out later on.....if its from your computers or not

If you have wireless, enable security on it-otherwise it's pretty safe to assume that someone is hijacking your bandwidth.

I leave it open. One neighbor chips in on the bill. I was curious if another neighbor has tapped in.

If I didn't have a monthly bandwidth cap, I'd gladly open my connection to everyone in my building. Most people's modems are idling 99% of the time, mine included.

Is this under $15 a month internet service as fast and reliable as Verizon's dsl? Just trying to educate my self. I had a $17/ month dial up service before Verizon and would never go back to that one again. (Also pay $30/mo for Verizon)
