Don't know about Westward Ho, but when I was in Vegas there was a place on the strip called The Boardwalk (it's actually a Holiday Inn) and they had a super-sized hot dog for 99 cents which was two meals in itself. It was the best.

Ringing endorsement!

If you have to advise guests to get the hell out of the town (on only a three day visit) to clear their mind and "get realistic about the gambling and all the lures", what does that tell you?<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Good point Packer Las Vegas was built on people losing money in gambling not becoming a Disney World. With all the casino's that have been built last 20 years Circus Circus is still a mainstay for families.

The Westward Ho charges like $1.99 for that hot dog now I think. I went to the Riv for a conference a couple months ago and noticed the sign had changed. Inflation for you.

Hey everyone that lives in Nevada knows the casinos are there to take the money. What are they supposed to have a conscience about it? People seem to have a good time and repeat visitors are dime a dozen so obviously people are enjoying their losses enough to come for more. I say get away if you are someone that falls for the gambling all the time loser. If you come and only spend a couple hours a day at the tables you probably have other things that take up that non-gambling time and don't need to get off the Strip. Still I have had many friends come visit me who didn't gamble much at all and had a great time. Believe it or not, quite a few people love doing things around Vegas, not just patronizing the casinos!

I thought about your post at work tonight Packer and here's my two cents.

Las Vegas is the most honest town in America. It gives you what you want and is up front about it. Sex, gambling, drugs, any of your indulgences can be sacrificed here and no one will think otherwise. These things are found in abundance throughout the world but here you don't have to hide them or look for them.

Also, here you get what you pay for. It doesn't matter if you are a rock star or look like a bum. Money is the one common denominator here. You have it, you can get ANYTHING, for a price. Also, you take care of people and they will take care of you.

Lastly, this city is built on lack of self control and ignorance. It's kinda like going to a car dealer with zero knowledge. They will rip you off in every way they can if you let them. Same here, with gambling, drugs, women. It constantly amazes me that people will blow thousands on the tables or machines without the slightest clue of the correct way to play them. They don't research at all, and then cry and complain that the game is fixed or crooked.
The addicts you speak of (gambling, drinking, drugs) are also a byproduct of lack of self-control here. This is not a town for the weak at heart, it will eat you up and spit you out because there are twenty more lining up to take your place. If you allow yourself to overindulge, Las Vegas won't stop you.
Again, don't come crying, because in the end it is up to the individual to be responsible for his/her own behavior (or at least it used to be in light of today's litigious society).

In summary, Las Vegas is a microcosm of everytown. Just more blunt, in your face, and ready available. Basically, it is up to you to make it what you wish.

All Hail Green!

Congrats GD. I too think yours is one of the posts of the year.

Everyone please note:

GD basically said EXACTLY what I said at the outset. He just said in from a pro-Vegas point of view. He makes no bones about Vegas trying to cripple anyone with any slight sign of weakness.

I'm not saying you can't use control and enjoy Vegas. I'm not saying to blow the whole place up. I am just telling people to be honest with themselves and understand what the true goal is for EVERYTHING Vegas.

When you take basic human nature and add comps, countless distractions, free booze, late hours... what the hell do you think you get?

You get lots of filthy rich casino companies and lots of totally ruined individuals and families.

Why do you think the actual hold on table games is really never discussed? The "theoretical hold" is dicussed instead. Because when you take human nature and add all these other "Vegas extras" the hold becomes a percentage that would make Tony Saprano blush.
That's why!

I just was looking for input. I understand GD and others defending the fair city. I have no problem with that.

The problem is that other young kids and morons who clutter up most of the threads here want to talk about a cheap hotdog.

What in the HELL does that have to do with this topic? You ever see an ad praising the Vegas cheap weiner concessions. You think casino hosts recruit high rollers on the merits of the 99 cent super weiner.
NO!

you said the price of food has risen so high there is no value then when people point out some food values you answer with " What the hell does that have to do with this topic?"

Huh?

There are food deals for every budget in that town, if you know where to find them. There are good gambling deals all over town, if you know how to exploit them.

Where else can you go and get free hotel rooms and food? Their is free, cheap and ( for serious gamblers) comped entertainment all over town.

I'm sorry, but your off base.

For those who know nothing and get beat up....so what? It's their disposable income. Their free to spend it elsewhere next time if they decide they don't like Las Vegas. Nobody forces them into the casinos.

Business is business Packer. Cry about ENRON not Las Vegas. If you live here GET OUT, if you don't want to vacation here, DON'T.

In spite of Ashcroft this is still America and we get to make choices in life.

- K1

FWIW my wife and I made over 30K gambling last year. We get comped at one of the most beautiful hotels in the WORLD. We just got an invitation to see Prince <yawn> and spend the weekend at MB on Memorial Day Weekend.

Don't blame the city because a lot of ignorant fools get drunk and blow their life savings in Casino's.

The "hooks" are just business, like coupons to get you to buy overpriced food in you local supermarket.

Mr Green,

I am not saying that some might not enjoy a cheap "dog" and consider it great cuisine. I am saying that hotdogs have nothing to do with the topic because it is not advertised to be something to bring anyone to Vegas who has any serious money to spend. If you Vegas guys had to depend on the hotdog crowd to support the expenses of your city... Well I don't have to tell you how far in the shitter you would be.

Also, for those of you who are mathematically challenged... Comps have not been, are not, and will never be FREE!!!!! They are based on a simple computation of giving you back a small postion of your "expected loss". Based on all the distractions and pitfalls mentioned above, and based on simple human nature.... If you are indeed ahead 30K... Then get the hell out of Dodge! Over time if you tempt fate over and over... at some point you WILL pay dearly for those "FREE" comps.

You heard it here. Don't say you were not warned!

Once again another good point Packer this is what happens wher you have corporations run things vs the mob. Las Vegas was a much better place to visit when the mob ran things.

Correction General...

Nobody dreams of going there to lose money. There lies the evil "unadvertised" side of Vegas.

They get you there with all the glamorous ads. Then they proceed to try to seperate you from not just what you brought and intended to gamble. Not just what you have access to thru the ATM, or credit cards, or whatever. They are really trying (over time) to rob you of everything of any value that you have.

Sounds pretty tough I know. but balls on accurate.

Las Vegas is what it is, "you can never go home again". The Damon Runyon city I came to in '68 is forever gone and along with it its code of ethics. There's no more professionalsim in gaming or in the domestic side for that matter. The slide began wwhen the casino owners sold the City out and sought other venues. When they opened in other areas of the country they began a cannibalism that served their bottom lines but began a Las Vegas slide. The slide I refer to is in their corporate gambling attitudes.
When this went in the tank it took down the rest of the attendent areas that were subservient to gambling i.e. dinning/drinking, classy hookers, law enforcement that kept the city safe but was "understanding". There was a code of tipping that was almost sharing. There weren't many bad jobs, even busboys and barboys were cut in. Above all the owners were people, not a board or a conglomerate. They were gamblers themselves and at one time were out there scuffling with the rest of us. There was a pride and professionalism in being a sportsbook clerk or supervisor, a dealer, waiter/waitress, cab driver, hooker, pit boss, cook, etc.. You had to want it and know your stuff because
jobs weren't left open very often and were hard to get.

All this sounds nice and romantic but I'm no fool. The change to corporations and conglomerates created huge mega-resorts and tens of thousands of jobs. The bottom lines went out of site (no pun intended, not like skimming in the day). These moves fed massive gambling projects in other states and countries. I'm not smart enough to see the end or where it's all going. I wish. The only people who long for the other, older Las Vegas are the people who experienced it. The rest have nothing to compare this current version to.

As soon as you unpack you bags, or moving van if you have any "stuff", your considered a "local". Vegas is an unreal place to you. (Only newcomers and visitors call it "Vegas", check it out).
You can deal or work at Albertsons. Work in a sportsbook without a clue. Be a cocktail waitress or a teacher without another clue. Jobs everywhere but no experience or pride required. The casino business in Las Vegas is just another job now.
What we are is first in suicides, teen suicides, smoking and drinking per capita, smoking releated deaths. teen smoking. We're 49th in highschool kids going to college but first in highschool dropouts. Now that the marshmellow factory left town nothing is produced here. There is no great university or hospitals. No mass transit syatem. Teenagers are in charge of traffic and growth issues. We are # 1 in indicted politicians however. Belive it or not Las Vegas has more churches per capits than ony other US city. Go figure.

Where is all this nonsense going? If you don't know the Old Las Vegas this current one is just fine, even great.....ScottyS (this is to long to proof read)

Green, I just now read it and your right on. Kinda morbid. I've got nothing to complain about. LV has been very good for me. We had our turn at bat now it's others turn. We influenced LV now it's time for others to put their brand on it. No complaints buddy. Thanx.....ScottyS
