I know this is late, but can somene explain to me why Torre would get Elbert up in the bullpen for Howard, but then not use him.

If Torre's reasoning is that he doesn't want to put another pitcher in because the pitcher bats second next inning, why even bother getting Elbert up?

He has a deep bullpen. Why not use it?
