The winner of this week's "Hoosier Millionaire" game show died after being hit by a pickup truck just hours after the show's taping, authorities said Friday.

Carl D. Atwood, 73, won $57,000 on Thursday during a taping of the television game show in Indianapolis, Hoosier Lottery Director Jack Ro ss said.

After the two-hour taping, which will air tonight, Atwood returned to his hometown of Elwood with the check, Ro ss said.

About 7 p.m., Atwood was cr ossing Main Street a block from his home -- on his way to the grocery store where he had bought the ticket that got him on the show -- when a black pickup rounded a corner and struck him, said Elwood Police Chief Toby R. Barker.

"It was at an unlighted intersection, and Mr. Atwood had dark clothing on," Barker said, "so the driver did not see him before he hit him."

Atwood suffered a head injury, Barker said. He was taken to a local hospital and transported to an Indianapolis hospital, where he died.

The driver, Brian Harris, 29, an Elwood firefighter, will not be charged, Barker said.

Elwood, a city of about 10,000 in Madison County, is about 45 miles northeast of Indianapolis.

"We are going to air the show," Ro ss said in a telephone interview. "That is what they (the Atwood family) wanted to do, and at the end of the show we will have something in memory of Carl Atwood."

A woman who answered the phone at the Atwood residence Friday afternoon, but declined to identify herself, said the family was too grief-stricken to speak about the accident.

Contestants for "Hoosier Millionaire" are selected from players of a scratch-off lottery ticket game.

Every 13th week of the show, the winning contestants from the previous 12 weeks are invited to compete for $1 million.

"We will certainly have a place on that show for someone who the family chooses to take his place," ro ss said.

This reminds me of Alanis Morrisette's song ...

"won the lottery ... died the next day.
isn't it ironic?"

This reminds me of the cocktail waitress that won the biggest MEGABUCKS in Vegas at the time for millions and a few days later was hit by a car from behind and subsequently paralyed for life and almost killed.

Something similar happened in Mass in the 90's. A guy won around 8 million in what they call Mass Millions (I think thats what its called), any way, he tells reporters he is going to keep his job (and get this) as a janitor in a cafeteria. A week later he dies of a heart attack while mopping the cafeteria floor. I swear its true.

That is tragic. Does the family now get the winnings or does the state do their usual screwing with these lotteries?

Wil, you remember when Whitey Bulger hit the Mass. lottery for a million or so?..Whitey happens to be head mobster in Mass. and is on the FBI's most wanted list...He also is the brother of former state senator Billy Bulger...Gee I wonder if that was fixed??

Wil It was like the end of thew 80's or early ninties if I remember...I remember the Boston Herald had a picture of Whitey on the front page dragging on a cig saying...they ain't going to believe this.
Later it was found out that whitey did not hit it but strong armed sombody for it,and made the claim.

Dimes..Billy was state senate majority leader later given a sweetheart job as pres. of UMASS. He was later questioned and pleaded the 5th in regards to questioning about brother Whitey...he then resigned and hooked the state for a huge golden parachute retirment...He aslo has another brother doing time...and that brother also had a patronage job with the state of Taxachussetts.

I believe Whitey is on the list just under Osama on the FBI most wanted....he fxcked the fbi bigtime....he was supposed to be a rat,but eneded up fxckin a dirty FBI guy.
