ATLANTA (MyFox Atlanta) – The man convicted of hiring a hit man to kill his daughter-in-law will spend the rest of his life in prison. The jury decided Chiman Rai's fate Friday, after finding him guilty of murder the day before.
Rai's children made passionate pleas to the jury to spare their father's life.
"His dedication and love has made me the person I am today," said Rai's daughter Jvoti Rai Chawla.
"I love my father very, very much and I don't know what I'd do without him," said Sandeep Rai.
The jury decided to give Rai life in prison.
The family of the woman Rai was convicted of having killed spoke out about the sentence.
"I'm pleased with the verdict. Based on my daughter's death, I believe that was warranted," said Sparkle Rai's father, Bennett Reid.
Sparkle Rai was killed eight years ago and her father-in-law was convicted of hiring a hit man to murder her.
Prosecutors said Chiman Rai, a native of India, was so angry his son married a black woman and had a child with her that he paid $10,000 to have his daughter-in-law killed.
Sparkle Rai's daughter, Analla, was in the room when her mother was murdered.
Sparkle Rai's stepmother, Donna Lowry, said she was OK with the jury's sentence.
"The main thing, he's 68-years-old and the feeling is he's never going to get out and that was the main thing I wanted, for him to never get out," said Lowry, a television reporter for 11Alive.
It took the jury only 90 minutes to decide Chiman Rai would get life without parole.
Chiman Rai's attorney and his family said they were pleased his life was spared.
Sparkle Rai's family said the most difficult times lay ahead when they have to tell her daughter what happened to her mother and by whom.
"That's going to be difficult to tell her her grandfather ordered a hit on her mother while she was an infant in the apartment. I can't even imagine anything more horrible," said Lowry.
Chiman Rai's son, who was married to Sparkle Rai, was not in court Friday.
Sparkle Rai was 22-years-old when she was killed and her daughter, who is now 8-years-old is being raised by her grandfather and grand-stepmother.
Relatives said the child his happy, smart and well-adjusted.
