In 21 seasons with South Carolina, Florida, Washington Redskins and Duke, S.Spurrier is 21-0 in... his season openers. The guy just know how to prepare his teams early on. 4-0 with SC, 12-0 with Floirda, 3-0 with Duke and 2-0 with the 'Skins.
We can love him or hate him, but his game #1 record is insane. This season he is working with 100% of his own recruits. No excuse if he fails. He has the talent he wanted and a great chance to prove that he can stil have a good offense. NCST had the worst defense in the ACC last season by a rather big margin.
I'm a big admirer of R.Wilson and what he did last season with NCST. He was $ as a starter, and great as a dog. But keep in mind that NCST was underdog in every game vs lined opponents last season, even against Duke and E.Carolina. Actually, it's only in the second half of the season, when the linemakers realized that NCST is underrated, when the line went under +7 in several games. The question is, will NCST deliver now when the expectations are significiently higher. Can they be a covering machine as favorites ? I'm not so sure about that. They will be better this season and could win 7-8 games but don't expect them to repeat that great 9-2-1 ATS season because it just won't happen.
Finally, this is a ACC vs SEC game with ACC being favored. If history can teach us anything, then we should go with the SEC dog. According to sportsdatabase, ACC teams favored by 4.5-17 pts vs SEC teams are 9-27-1 ATS since 1981.
South Carolina +5 is my first play of the year !
