An anonymous account on Twitter claiming to be a family member of a victim of the Uvalde, Texas mass shooting said that a representative of Gov. Greg Abbott threatened to "disappear" the family for refusing to agree to a bribe. It was a hoax but the claim was amplified and shared by journalists, Democrat politicians and left-wing influencers. Within a few hours of being posted on Thursday night, his post had over 32,000 retweets.

Myself and others on Twitter separately investigated the account (@MyCancerJourne3) and discovered it belongs to a 43-year-old white man from Spokane, Wash. named Jason R. Nauertz. He has no ties to Uvalde. In other posts on Twitter, he had previously claimed to be black, a 9/11 first responder, said he had another nephew who was killed by a sheriff, was once a prisoner of war and was a Purple Heart recipient. No one with his name has received a Purple Heart.

Despite the lack of evidence presented in the original shocking allegation against Gov. Abbott, many journalists and politicians believed him. They include Austin Chronicle culture editor Richard Whittaker, Los Angeles Times writer and Pulitzer-prize winner Patt Morrison, CBS46 reporter Shon Gables, Entertainment Weekly digital editor Yolando Machado, the chair of the Austin News Guild, Katie Hall and ex-MSNBC host Keith Olbermann. Texas Democrat congressman Joaquin Castro asked the account to send him a private message.

By Friday, the man behind the Twitter account used the Joy Reid excuse and said he had been "hacked." He has locked or disabled his account and the hoax posts about Gov. Abbott and Uvalde have been deleted.
