Update at 8:58 a.m. ET: The latest reports cite Yemeni sources who say 16 people, including six attackers, died outside the U.S. mission in Sana.
"The United States condemns this attack," White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe tells reporters. "We offer our sincere condolences to the loved ones of the Yemenis lost in today's violence. This attack is a reminder of the continuing threat we face from violent extremists both at home and abroad."
An embassy spokesman tells
The New York Times that the facility has been closed.
"We heard the sounds of a heavy gun battle going on," Trev Mason, a British national, tells
CNN. "I looked out my window, and we saw the first explosion going off -- a massive fireball very close to the U.S. Embassy. The gun battle went on for a further 10 to 15 minutes, followed by two further loud explosions."
Here's the statement we just received from Foggy Bottom:
This morning, September 17, at approximately 9:15 local time, the U.S. Embassy in Sana’a Yemen was attacked by armed terrorists. A number of explosions occurred in the vicinity of the Embassy’s main gate and there were several secondary explosions. A number of Yemeni security personnel were killed and injured, as were several Yemeni citizens waiting to gain entry to the Embassy. The U.S. Embassy condemns this attack in the strongest possible terms. Today’s events demonstrate that terrorist criminals will not hesitate to kill innocent citizens and those charged with protecting them in pursuit of their agenda of terror.
The Embassy is working closely with senior Yemeni government officials to investigate this incident. We will rely on continued close cooperation with Yemeni authorities to complete a thorough investigation and to bring the perpetrators of this heinous terrorist crime to justice.
