Hey guys,

For all those long term gamblers, I'm seeking some advice to see if it's worth it to start betting in sports. What are your strategies to come out profitable after each season? Is it worth it to subscribe to any of these sport betting systems?

Also, how do I find out what these betting terms mean? For example: ATS, fade, units... etc.

Looking forward to your answers and hopefully making some big $$$! Anything and everything will be much appreciated!

Simple advice: never or rarely play a game that pays -250. Very high risk, but low reward.

ATS: dunno how to explain, but this is the line.

Fade: bet on their opponent

Btw, for other terms, try asking google. Maybe yahoo. Never ask bing.

if you do not know what ATS, fade, units, etc are - - then definitely go to the bookstore and read a bunch
of sports betting books to get acclimated to the terminology.
Never pay for picks -- it is a long term loser.

True! Esp. since you can have free capped picks here at the RX which are just as good as paid picks. You just have to weed out hot cappers from fade worthy cappers.

For NCAA Basketball: Willie, Lt. Dan, Wand are reliable. I also post picks that hit at a high rate, although it's because I only post picks that I'm really sure of.

For NBA: Bookiereport(remember: the house always wins), fieldgoalz(who has gone tout), akphidelt, Mantis Toboggan and FatBoyLikeCake(dont know his name now) are hot cappers. In the past years, I was pretty good at NBA, but I think I'm hitting at a 50% rate only this year.

Add Biz and nicolaivinther to reliable NBA Cappers. Don't follow yoders or XSPowers often

For someone uneducated, naive and gullible (and yes...you are all those times three no matter what you think), you are entering very dangerous waters. I will not spend a lot of time lecturing you, but I will say this - The smartest bettor I ever knew made $1 wagers. There is much wisdom what I've just told you. Be wise.

That's a little harsh.

Everyone was in his shoes at one time. I remember going to the card room the first time, didn't know much. Lost $200 playing 3/6 limit and swore it would never happen again. I hated the feeling of losing, but hated not understanding the game as well as others even more. I bought a few books, got a better understanding of the game, and I improved immensely.

I would agree Recon, by a few books on basic sports gambling. Its as much mental as anything. There will be days that just don't go right and they certainly test your fortitude. It's not for everyone.

As for strategies, everyone has their different methods. Some are number crunchers, others assess the mental/psychological side of a game, others use long term winning systems/trends/angles. It depends on what works for YOU.

For now, find someone on this forum that you are comfortable following. Many solid cappers on this site. I enjoy reading the various threads, and will also play a pick or 2 from people here. If someone I respect posts a thread on a specific game, and adds a thoughtful reason why (not necessary, but helpful), I'll certainly add that to my playlist. For most established players, they play their own picks.

Check out the various sports, find some people you are comfortable with, and go slow. Bet an amount per game that doesn't make you squirm. Bet the same amount every game, don't vary bet size. Hope this helps.

Maybe so...but I just thought it's much better at the start to enter this endeavor with fear and trembling. The stories are endless of those starting out to find themselves in a deep, dark hole before they even knew what hit them. Given the three aspects of sports betting; handicapping, money management and wagering strategy... money management is far and away the most important of the three. You can read and study for a long time about sports betting and in the end you can come to the conclusion that you've been reading and studying the wrong stuff. I'm a believer that "One must learn from he who knows" and those "who know" are in rarefied air. I suppose all I'm really trying to say is "Be very careful with your money." It's not what you think.

terms you can find online usually online books will have a how to section Where they describe wagers etc.
My personal advice DONT DO THIS FOR A LIVING very few are capable of doing this. Don't go out there with wagers expecting to make a killing quickly. Don't EVER purchase those scam systems you can more than likely find their strategies somewhere online. Check service forum for people more knowledgable about certain systems. also learned quickly myself when I first started that if a spread or line looked too good to be true ... It's because it is and they're begging people to put the house on that "LOCK" or "NO WAY IT'LL LOSE" "EASY WINNER"
NO SUCH THINGS! At least until they have gone final.
Oh do it for entertainment this way you don't get hooked and get yourself in too deep. Most of the people here are here to help each other. You will see bickering and others bashing others...ignore all that and if you plan on hanging out here you'll know who you can talk to or ignore. Hope this helps feel free to see how you would do on your plays by posting them and giving brief wrote ups or whatever you want and people will give theirs ... GL

Thanks for all the feedback guys! I'm definitely not coming in with a huge bank roll trying to make money quick. I definitely just want to have fun. I love watching sports so why not try to make some money from it.

Hopefully I can work my way up to become a regular and reliable poster.

I'll be posting a new thread with my picks and I'll also post in akp's thread since he keeps track of a ton of people.

I look forward to having fun with this.

GL to all!

I hope you can really, truly understand this. I have been doing this for over 30 something years. Climb on top of your roof and throw off all the money you plan on starting this gambling adventure with, watch your neighbors and their kids scoop up your hard earned money and run away with, and dont forget that feeling in your heart and stomach because if you continue to gamble you will have to experience it a thousand times.

My advice for money management is simple. Flat bet ! And only about 1-3 percent of bankroll for bet size.

I agree with every reply - the guys/gals who can stick-around betting are the ones to listen too. As you can see, it is a grind - but more of a labor of love I would think for many of us.
