I'm Happy, but still amazed

I'm obviously very happy that killings have subsided in Iraq.

I'm also just amazed that Saddam choose to stay there and fight, and not deploy either chem weapons or a stronger resistance.

As an example, I don't recall hearing Iraq soldiers fired anti tank missles, rather they choose to use rpg's - which can't penetrate Abram's armour.

What I just can't figure out is this:

If they didn't have the right stuff to fight the US, why did'nt Saddam elect to seek refuge and avoid this disaster when that option was open to him?

Joecy C. I agree. This has been way to easy. Saddam had to know that he didn't have the military to compete. I think he was expecting the entire Arab world to rise up against is and fortunately they haven't. I am still wondering why he hasn't released his WMD? I'm wondering if he was trying to lure the troops into one place and then release his WMD. Maybe we got him before he could do that.

It is freaky. Hussein could have lived a life of luxurious exile and been free to make all kinds of shady deals with terrorist groups, OPEC and anyone else he wanted to, hung on to some money, most of his power, and been thought of as a martyr by his supporters, an "honourable" man who stood down for the greater good of the iraqi people. The fact that he stayed made me honestly believe that something terrible was going to happen when troops reached Baghdad -- a bio attack, some huge final stand from the Republican Guard, something. It's odd to see it go down the way it has so far, really odd.

As far as Saddam, I would compare it to some criminals challenging the police, they are just nuts. They never win. Always end up getting there azz beat.

It's simple. Saddam believed his buddies the French, Germans, Syrians and Russians could hold the US off thru the circus UN and the summer would put the US off another year.

Saddam never believed it was actually going to happen and if it did Saddam thought Bush would operate like clintoon and cut and run if we lost a few soldiers. Saddam just didn't believe the telegraphed right hook until it was at his door step.

Actually the Iraqis did use anti-tank weapons in the Southern battles near Najaf and Naseriyah, but they did not fare well. Much of their anti-tank weaponary had been destroyed in the previous Gulf War, and that which wasn't was often taken out by air support. You are right though, an RPG versus an Abrams Tank is like a person punching a concrete wall...pointless.

The No. Koreans have, I understand, armour penetrating shoulder launchers for sale, and certainly Saddam had the $$ to buy that shit.

Certainly, Saddam knew what he had and didn't have.

Why he didn't cut a deal to live out his live elsewhere, is a mystery we'll probably never have a clear answer to.

Yea, I'd say the Iraqi soldiers had more heart. They were fighting for their country's existance. We just had way way more troops and weapons.
