I think this is the very first American professional team you can buy real stock in. No the packers don't count.

You could buy stock in the Indians a little while ago. Celtics too I think had shares for a small part of the team like 20 years ago.

Like Cablevision and then MSG with the Knicks and Rangers. I think 1 of the Canadien telecommunications companies owns the Maple Leafs too. Probably a few others.

There are many publicly traded companies that own professional sports teams including Liberty media who has owned the braves for a long time.

But none of the names you listed above has ever broke off the professional team and offered stock purely on the team itself.

I did not know about the Cleveland /Boston thing. From what I read it seems like they were only offing a very small piece of those organizations

Those are the only teams owned by public companies. I looked it up because I was unaware of any others.

Not sure why Indians/Celtics did what they did, my guess is it mostly just had to do with late 90's market froth and they wanted to cash out. That seems to be the case for the Indians especially.

It's nice when you have fans willing to make subpar investments so they can say "I own a piece of XYZ!"
