Im stuck in the discman era, seems more convenient to just carry one of those i pods around, but know nothing about them, are they the same as mp3 which I also know nothing about also when you get them how do you put music on them?

yes... you load software onto your computer. Then you plug your MP3 player (IPod, Zune, or similar device) into your computer and transfer the music using the software.
IPod is prob best to use and has most efficient battery life. Or at least has the largest segment of the market.

you can find IPods cheap on the internet for two reasons.. people selling them to finance and IPhone, which is a combonation of phone and music player... or they are stolen and ppl trying to fence

in a nutshell , ipods suck for one very reason

they do NOT use/play mp3 files in a native form

example

you get a mp3 file from the internet, you cant just drag/drop into the mp3 player (once you plug it in , it normally shows as another drive in 'my computer')

an ipod absolutely requires that you use itunes.....to convert it to apple's format

the easiest way I can describe 'getting music into them' is

you get a software that 'transforms' your cds into mp3 files (real player, media monkey and others)

this will allow you to 'copy' your cds into the harddrive in your computer (with a very small reduction in quality, you can use several kbps to encode them , 128 is not cd quality but good enough, 192 is very very close so that you couldnt tell if its a cd or not)

anyway

you end up with a bunch of files in your computer (one file / song)

you then copy/paste from your harddrive onto your mp3 player.....and play them

the guy is asking for help and there is a ton of misinformation in this thread.

ipods can play any mp3 as long as it wasn't purchased from somebody else's itunes account on another computer (even then you can get get around it).

you can either have itunes rip all your cd's for you, or have windows media player, or any other program...just make sure you select mp3.

looking for the 'ton of mis information'

its agreed that any program can be used to rip the cds

but can an ipod play a simple mp3 file without needing a conversion into an AAC file?????

(and yeah, you can get around to DRM but obviously he is not up to that , if he was he wouldn't be asking for the basics of how 'to play mp3 files' , bypassing DRM.....while not rocket science .....is not what he wants, he wants easy playing)

the easiest way (unless of course I am wrong an suddenly an ipod can play a NATIVE mp3 file without further convertion) is NOT to get an ipod

plenty of other standard mp3 players exist these days and out of the ones I like are the sony ones, there is really no reason why to get involved with DRM and bypassing such restrictions just to play a file that you paid for

yes no itunes or special software, just cut and paste into the correct folder, i'm sure other people who have newer ipods can help more, although i would think it can't be much different

ok so

you plug in your ipod into your computer and then do what to transfer the files?

I ask this because look at this info from apple about supported file formats (on the ipod shuttle)

http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/specs.html

note that the link specifies on both windows/apple platforms that itunes IS required to transfer files
