CHICAGO (AP) — The Illinois Gaming Board plans to seek a legal opinion on whether daily fantasy sports websites like those ordered shut down in Nevada violate state law.

Spokesman Gene O'Shea said Friday the board believes sites like DraftKings and FanDuel are illegal in Illinois. He says the board will likely send a letter next week asking Attorney General Lisa Madigan for an opinion because it doesn't have authority to take action.

Nevada regulators on Thursday ordered the sites to shut down, saying they can't operate in the state without a gambling license.

The sites insist they're skill-based — not chance-based — wagers and therefore not subject to gambling regulations.

Illinois doesn't allow internet gambling. State law prohibits playing "a game of chance or skill for money or other thing of value."

Illinois ought to concern themselves with paying their lottery winners.

I'm going to take a different angle at this. I'm hoping this passes so then you have even more money trying to legalize sports gambling.

This will be a Huge Snowball affect... you will see more and more States looking into them.

By Nevada telling them they need a License to operate, they are saying you are a Sports Gambling Game.

Should be illegal for girls to be governors. Complete craziness.

Lottery winners in Illinois get IOUs for prizes over $600

By Aaron Smith
@AaronSmithCNN

You can play the lottery in Illinois these days, but you just can't win much.

The cash-strapped state said on Thursday that it can't pay out
anything over $600 for the time being. For a ticket worth more than
that, winners get an IOU that won't be paid off until the state
government resolves its long-running budget crisis.

Illinois Lottery spokesman Steve Rossi blamed the hold-up on "the
ongoing budget stalemate in Springfield," the state capital. "Once a
budget is passed, all outstanding claims will be paid."

Well, I mean it is gambling. It's kind of hilarious that they say it isn't.

It is but they had no choice.

If they didn't go with the "It's not gambling, it's skill based!" talking point then there would've never been DFS.

DFS got too big. In a way the sites brought this on themselves with relentless advertising on radio and TV. If it wasn't the scandal with inside information it would have been something else. Now what are the leagues going to do now that Nevada has classified it as the same as sports wagering. If this ever leads to widespread sports betting being legal. I can imagine a TV commercial with Billy Walters saying I won $15 million at Cantor Gaming and you can too.

They really had no choice though. It is a marketplace app and the only way that business model works is if you really scale out the customer base. It just can't work on a smaller scale. You need a huge ecosystem. So I'm not sure what else they could've done as far as plan for growth. The VC money they got was explicitly for robust advertising to grow the business at many multiples per year. If they don't try to do that, they don't get all that funding.

Similar to say uber or airbnb or ebay.

Big reason why losing big states like FL/IL/PA could be so bad even if you aren't from those states.

I do agree though, if it wasn't this thing with Ethan then it would've been something else. They probably should've tried to confront the regulatory situation a little sooner rather than to try to tip toe around it. GL trying to tip toe around gov regulations. But really when the millions are flowing in from VCs, who wants to take that risk?

They had the choice to not challenge in New Jersey, and let sports betting go the way of marijuana, had they done that I doubt the gaming board in Nevada goes after them. But they didn't, and to top it off they rubbed it in, how much money they were making.

Who rubbed what in?

Not like the DFS sites can control what the NFL does regarding sports betting legislation in various states.
