You are much better off buying the whole box of pull tabs at your local Knights of Columbus.

I called the new york state lottery office one day because i wanted to know exactly how many grand prize winners there was for the 2 dollar win for life tickets. the grand prize is win a 1,000 bucks a week for life.
I must have got transferred on the phone at least 10 times. Not one person knew the answer. then finally somebody was able to tell me that for every 14 million tickets they print up, they put one grand prize winner in it.
So there you go a 1 in 14 million chance of winning a 1,000 bucks a week for life. Not very good odds, so good luck with your strategy of buying up all the tickets, see you at the poorhouse or better yet the mental house.

Like others have said the lottery is basically just another tax. Politicians love the lottery, thats where they get all here pork barrel money.
The politicians all want to ban online gambling, but you never hear any of them saying the lottery should be banned since gambling is evil. They want us all to play lotteries and go to their indian casino friends to lose money.
Another bad thing about the lotteries is the prize structures. Our mega million jackpot is up to 137 this friday. Nobody needs to win 137 million, break the jackpot up into 137 million dollar prizes. Do you know if all states did this instead of giving the giant jackpots to usually 1 or 2 people the effect it would have on the economy. You would have all these million dollar winners spending all that money. On top of that am sure that more people would play the lottery knowing they have a better chance at winning some big money. Really are stupid people in charge of things in our world.

With a huge jackpot, they get to tax the 137 million ... break that up into smaller prizes worth say $1,000 ... and they essentially get NOTHING.

owned 2 convenient stores in peabody and lynn mass, you guys got any questions about lottery and %'s, im the right man to ask.
Who says you would profit buying a whole book of 20 dollar tickets?
Theres a sucker born every minute

The $20 dollar scratch ticket in MA has over a 90% payout percentage which is probably the best in the country. As a bonus every winner of a $1K,$10K or $25K they put your name into drawing to win $1 Million a year for life which is pretty good. I already won 2 $1K prizes so I got a 1:20,540 chance of winning a million/year for life, so I got that going for me. :103631605

what are you talking about? I said 137 one million dollar prizes, they would get a huge amount of taxes from each person, plus the economy would make out because all 137 people would be buying tons of things. Where as the one prize winner wont be spending as much.

How many of those people would be in the highest tax bracket? The 137 million winner would.

Some of them might even get earned income credit

I know a guy who owns a family gas station that sells lottery tickets. Back when lottery tickets were popular in Texas, people used to buy the $1-5 tickets at his store and scratch them all off right in the store. He would try and monitor the amount of winners over $20 from each 250 pack. If after the first 200 tickets, he didnt see any tickets above $20, then he would buy the rest of the pack himself. He almost always made a profit doing this he claimed. I watched him do it a few times when he scratched off the last 20 tickets and he received around $80 both times.

For some reason Mr. Newlywed keeps coming to mind. The lottery is a scam pure and simple. They actually have $50 scratch off tickets here. Even giving the money to JJ to gamble with gives you better odds of winning.

Along the lines of post #31, I thought it was always better to buy the scratch-offs towards the end of the roll. I'm not a big scratcher  but I also heard this from people that work in the stores that sell the tickets.

If only scratch tickets worked that way ... do you really think the people at GTech are that stupid?

That is llike saying a person lost $500 on a slot machine, and then playing on it because the machine is "due"
