This could be BO in 2012.….

And we’ll all be grateful.

By Martin Fletcher - The Times May 29, 2009

Two weeks from today, Iran’s presidential election will determine whether Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Holocaust-denying, Israel-hating, America-bashing incumbent, remains in office, whether his country continues its drive to become a nuclear power, and whether a state with a key role in Iraq, Afghanistan and other international flashpoints remains hostile to the West.

The stakes could scarcely be higher, but it is the lowly potato that has been grabbing attention.

The Government is handing out 400,000 tonnes of free spuds in rural towns.

It says that it is merely distributing the surplus from a bumper crop, but Mr Ahmadinejad’s opponents accuse it of bribing the poor. “Death to potatoes,” they chant at rallies.

give a man a potato, and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to grow potatoes, and you'll have to give him a farm to survive. Then, you'll have to water it and harvest it and get it to the market too.

After all, what can a man that accepts a potato for his fucking vote actually do for himself?

Ahmanutjob doesn't control Iran. The election is a farce. Iran is run by radical mullahs, hardline clerics who enslave and brutalize the population.

Worked well for who?

It only really took off after regulations were put into place and once those regulations were relaxed, those same problems emerged again

Capitalism worked, now China and to a lesser extent India are going to beat the US at their own game.

I’m afraid you’re right.

The key problem facing the US is they are so focused internally that all there policies created are focused on America in order to get politicans re-elected. They are losing sight of the fact we're living in a global marketplace.

What was the last piece of legislation to get broad bi-partisan support? I seem to remember something about Freedom Fries but what else?

While the US population and politicians are so focused on Right v left, democrats v republicans the let the next economic superpowers catch them.

yup we fought the fascists and commies over the years and now we are becoming them

while past commies are going our direction

the ebbs and flows over the course of human history i suppose but the right answer is obvious freedom, individual liberty, capitalism, and free markets make things better for everybody....collectivism (which is a huge bulk of what mankind has seen over the course of history) leads to tyranny, communism, fascism, statism, etc....and makes things shitty for a bulk of the population while a few elitists live like kings......

as for india

they had a surprise election result not too long ago where a bunch of people from the communist party got the boot from parliament

stock market soared like 15% the next day

No shit, eh? Money talks and bullshit walks. Politicians get the money from special interests, then do their bidding.

Also a big problem with this whole government takeover mode we are in is that we are a nation of immigrants

throughout history our motto has been essentially freedom, individual liberty, capitalism, and attract the best and brightest from abroad that are fleeing some shitty collectivism based society to be a part of american society

now with what's going on i'm sure alot of potential immigrants are looking at whats going on now and saying to themselves what's the point of going to the US anymore

plus if they have any brains they will realize their kids and such will be put under a mountain of debt most likely and throw in the fact that since 9/11 its become really hard to immigrate to the US the RIGHT way....

I heard a figure that the US was graduating people with Physical Fitness degrees at a 10/1 rate over Electrical Engineers.

not really sure that all that relevant....maybe comparing to all engineers not just one specific type.....would be more proper....

but i do know engineering enrollment is going up quite dramatically

As business degrees and such not really all that attractive right now LOL

one good thing about this mess

people finally waking up and realizing that paying 50k a year to get drunk 4 nights a week and get a worthless business degree is coming to an end

LOL

plus part of that has to do with our bloated fucked up health care system

i know many programs cover massages and acupuncture type shit with little to no reason (doctor note) necessary to be covered

and people wonder why our health care costs are so outrageous

A national Health Care system is something that could make the US more competitive.

If all things being equal a company has to choose between the US where they have to pay a huge chunk of money towards employee health care or a country like Canada where the health care is taken care of.

Low corporate tax rates are all over the world now. The US ranked 30th a couple years ago, not because they were raising rates but other countries were lowering them.

So have to offer other incentives

my point is you can learn things like business or economics to a pretty deep level on your own without getting a piece of paper saying you know it

kinda like i have done over the years

and coming from me i'd tell you the business and economics they teach in liberal colleges is complete dogshit to boot LOL

on the other hand as far as engineering goes the piece of paper is very important and its not a trade that you will likely be able to learn too well on your own without traditional schooling

the big problem with comparing is a huge chunk of the R&D and developments in medicine come from the US

these guys still gotta make money one way or the other

big pharma for instance looks like an industry that has major issues long term

investing in generic drug makers will probably be a good place to park some money long term

plus regardless our nation is so over medicated its not even funny

we are a nation of pill poppers

instead of eating healthy and excercising that would probably cure 80% (guessing) of the ailments that are treated by pill popping we just listen to our doc and pop some pills and be unhealthy slops

its just a huge variety of factors and complex issue

one thing i do know

is government won't have the right answers i know i don't

what will is the free markets as usual
