Not making this a poll mostly because I am lazy but also because there is just too many things....

So what do you equate his 8 golds to?

Batting .400? Pitching a perfect game? An NFL team going undefeated?

Those are just baseball. Anything in sports, make a comparison.

Id give it the same merit as Lance Armstrong winning all those tour de Frances ... Its an amazing feat , but lets face it , Phelps is just a swimmer , and Armstrong just some dude who rode a bicycle fast.

And OJ is just some guy who ran for 2003 yds in 14 games.

Phelps is the best American athlete MAYBE EVER.

OJ Simpson running for 2003 yds in 14 games is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more impressive to me , than Phelps. OJ had to run against 8 man lines the whole season in fridgid temperatures and against entire gameplans poised to stop him - while whats the longest race Phelps does , 400 m ? and wins by what , under a half second. Whoopdee fukking dog doo on a stick. Maybe when we live underwater , Ill give Phelps the credit he deserves, but I walk on the earth.

As for Olympians , I personally think what Jesse Owens accomplished in the Berlin games under the adverse conditions and predjudice was a bigger achievement than Phelps winning the Golds in Bejing. But thats just me.

and Im just a man who likes to joke and toke.

8 gold but 3 will be in relays. Regardless that is quite an accomplishment given that he is competing against the world's best in 5 different events and that includes specialists in each event.

Phelps ranks there with Owens no doubt and let's not forget
-Jackie Joyner Kersee who won golds in the heptathlon and long jump in 1988
- Decathletes Bob Mathias and Daley Thompson who both won consecutive golds

For a single Olympics games performance, I'd say it's as good as Eric Heiden winning every event in 1980. An argument can be made that Heiden's performance is even more dominant because of the range 500m to 10000m (sprint to long distance) but then again Phelps is winning in different strokes.

I'll be honest and I'm no Chad Johnson but Phelps is incredible BUT......he is just a swimmer. To me an athlete is someone who can run, jump, swim, accelerate, take a hit/injury, throw, catch, strength, endurance. Phelps is an awsome swimmer the best ever I would say. He is not the best athlete ever...in fact nowhere close. Think of the millions who have never swam...or who swam at a young age and gave it up. He has perfected a skill that many havent tried or have given up at an early age.

Dont get me wrong I don't want to take anything away from Phelps who has dedicted his life to becomeing the best swimmer ever. But just for comparisons sake lets look at a scenario.

If we took the world population or even just the US population and said the whole US population is going to train to be a swimmer. Would Phelps still be the best? If everyone HAD to try and be a ridiculous swimmer. My guess is no. However I dont think Chad Johnson would be in the top 500.

In contrast what if the US population had to train to be a Michael Jordan, LT, or Kobe Bryant. Would they still be the best? My guess is YES Jordan, LT, and Kobe would still be the best.

In summary Phelps is amazing but I dont rank him among the best athletes ever. I rank him as one of the best olympians ever.

I know what it will equate with if he is 7-0 and loses the last one. The second biggest choke job of the year.

PATS 18-1 *

I don't rate it nearly as high as the feats of Tiger Woods, or even up there with Padraig Harrington winning back to back majors.

If there were 12-15 diving events or gymnastic events China would win almost all, but they are limited to the number of events they can enter. Phelps is just lucky his sport has many events.

The guy is incredible and nothing should be taken away from that, but many Olympians dominate their event like Phelps does, they just don't have the opportunity to do it for 8 gold medals.

If he wasn't American most people here wouldn't care.

I Haven't Really Been Keeping Up w/ This Whole Phelps Story, But I'm Aware Of The 8 Medals Thing Due To It Being All Over ESPN News, Radio, Etc.....Any Sports Fan Is Aware....
But I Was In A Small Restuarant Earlier Tonight And Bob Costas Was On & I Saw Phelps Swimming In An Event & Finishing 2nd...........
Does That Mean His Chance For 8 Golds Is Over?
