Was a big fan of Brees ... think he's a class act all times... His Stats are there... and the Chargers are Not. ( at least as a Whole )

maybe if he was the QB on the Chargers, they would have a better record over the past 12 years..

PS rivers is a punk-- chargers have had egg on their face...

Saints have absolutely owned the Chargers when it comes to transactions.
We give them our shit and they give us their studs.
Its been a great realationship.

Brees and Sproles come to us

Robert Meachem and Patrick Robinson to to them.

What a lovely deal.

Next player we gonna take from them is Ladarius Green in the offseason and turn him into the next Jimmy Graham.

I think brees was and still might be a great player but I think it was a match made in heaven with him hooking up with Sean payton. Don't think he would have done the same starting in SD or going to Miami

Miami was Brees’ top choice in free agency, but Saban and the medical staff didn’t have enough confidence to sign him – so they chose Daunte Culpepper instead.
That still would have happened if Brees never left San Diego. But perhaps if Saban had no regrets or hadn't been second-guessed for passing on Brees, he wouldn’t have been so eager to bolt for Alabama in 2007. Maybe he would have even wound up trading for Rivers and thriving in the NFL.

Bush and Rivers wind up elsewhere. With the Saints drafting Leinart, Bush would have slipped even further in the 2006 draft – maybe to the New York Jets with the fourth pick? Can you imagine the combination of Bush’s superstar aura and the New York spotlight? Remember, Bush had more than 1,500 yards from scrimmage as a rookie, including the playoffs, and scored 11 touchdowns. He might be hosting his own national morning talk show by now.
As for Rivers, the Chargers would have had to trade him in 2007 after Brees led them to the Super Bowl. Maybe he would have gone to Miami, or to the Raiders (who drafted JaMarcus Russell with the first pick that year).
Or maybe Rivers would have gone to the Cleveland Browns, who drafted Brady Quinn at No. 22 that year. And maybe Cleveland would have had the same starting QB for every game over the past 10 years – instead of 18.

The last 6 years would probably be pretty similar. Don't see a huge change there.

But SD was loaded Rivers first few years starting, he just wasn't close to his prime yet. That was really SD's 2 years to compete for the title.

Then by the time Rivers made the leap in '08, LT had declined, Merriman was off roids/injured and the team just wasn't really a true contender anymore.

If they had Brees those first few years then maybe they break through. Tough to question the decision though. Brees was coming off a bad torn labrum and he didn't exactly light it up his final year in SD (despite playing with easily the best RB and TE in the game at the time) He had a good year but paying him all that $ when you had Rivers waiting in the wings made sense at the time.

No, and here is why. Brees under an offensiveminded agressive coach is great. He needs to be the focus of the offense. Pass first, run second. Brees played under Marty Schottenheimer. Ultra conservative...run, run, pass. Brees' talent was wasted in SD. It's nice to see him reach his potential. Clearly the run game with LT was the focus of the offense in SD

Bingo. Can you imagine what Peyton Manning's career would have been like if he had Sean Payton as a coach instead of ultra conservative Tony Dungy. He would have thrown for 100,000 yards and won another couple Super Bowls instead of Brady. The importance of the QB - Coach connection cannot be understated. Can u imagine a Brady without Bellicheck or vice versa? Definitely not as effective.

To be fair, prior to just a few years ago shit was the only thing New Orleans had to offer for decades. So new orleans probably got the better deal of transactions with other teams. There's a reason why they call them the Aints...

All I know is Brees has played well against his old team at home and on a neutral field. This weekend he gets to go back to San Diego for the first time.

given how little the chargers have accomplished, the odds are just randomly "yes", let alone if you think brees has an "it" factor that Rivers doesn't.

I actually think they are comparable QB's and two great players but the chargers never win the playoff game and at some point you have to think brees gets them a few of those where rivers failed ... again, even if just randomly. Chargers did nothing so it is just likely they would have done better.

I do think someone makes a good point on the different coach and system though

That's fine but try not to think of it as the full 11 year period. Rather think of it when Rivers first tookover and had struggles early in his career when the team was really coming into its own. Star players on both sides of the ball, including some of the best players to ever play their posiiton.

If that '06 team or the '07 team has Brees on it then maybe they break through one of those years.

Sure Brees is better off on NO, but he is still >> Rivers for those early Rivers years.

After that, yeah it is probably a wash. SD is arguably the worst organization in the NFL so whether it is Brees or Rivers they probably would've found a way to F it up. Their GM was on fire for a little bit there in the early/mid 00's though. (Brees, LT, Gates, Phillips, Jammer, McNeil on OL, VJax, Jamaal Williams etc)
