Well I praised a Yankee yesterday, so I have to balance the scales a little and bash a Yankee today.
Of course once he gets 12 more hits it wont matter which team he plays for he would get in.
But lets say he ended his career tomorrow and was stuck on 2988 hits failing to hit the milestone.
Personally I think Jeter is the most overrated player in the last 30 years.
I cant think of another player with more hype.
Now is Jeter a way way above average player in baseball history? YES
But I hope the people in NY are not seriously considering giving him a statue next to Mantle or Joe DiMaggio.
He has always gotten credit for being things that he is not.
He is not a great defensive player, but yet he has won gold gloves.
Bill James who I highly respect calls Derick Jeter THE worst fielder in all of baseball since 2008, but yet he somehow won the Gold Glove in 2009 and 2010.
The top Yankee brass would love to figure out a way to move him to the outfield without causing a stink but it would be a PR nightmare. So I guess he will keep winning gold gloves while being one of the worst defensive players in baseball.
He gets credit for being a clutch player in postseason. He has had some big hits, but nothing like advertised. The problem is everytime he does anything at all they replay it on sportscenter 50,000 times. Arod gets accused of not getting the big hit. Jeter's career BA is not much better in postseason then AROD.
Give me Bernie Williams in the postseason anyday over Jeter.
Its like everything he does gets way overblown.
Does everyone remember the play against Oakland about 12 years ago where he gets the ball and throws it underhanded to get the guy out at home?
Thats a play that half the people on this forum could make, but the people in the media have blown that play so out of proportion to the point where some people call it one of the greatest plays in baseball history. It was over 10 years ago and I still saw a replay of that play the other day.
If Erick Aybar would have made that play it might not have even made sportscenter.
Bottom line is I think Jeter was a fantastic player. One of the top 7 or 8 shortstops of the last 30 years. But he is not an all-time great.
If his career ended today, and he played for the KC Royals, he would be very boarderline at best Hall of Famer.
