If Brees were still a Charger, they could challenge NE

Fair point that they miss Brees, but judging by how lopsided the Pats-Chargers game was, i don't think he would have made that big of a difference

So sad to see Brees playing so well, and Rivers so awful. What a horrific decision Chargers made

Maybe you missed the 1st 4 games of the season, I'll refresh your memory... Saints 0-4 , Brees 1 TD 9 INTs ...

considering Baltimore and Philly "challenged" NE, this isn't much of a statement. I know you aren't saying they would be as good as NE.

And let's get something straight, the Chargers are winning in spite of Norv Turner, not because of him.

Reminds me of how USC wins despite the Bozo.

"IF's" are basically wishing in one hand...

And shitting in the other.

IF Dan Fouts had just one decent defense...

IF Polian had selected Ryan Leaf over Peyton Manning...

IF John Friesz really was a rocket-armed-accurate QB...

IF Bobby Beathard had not started the trading our 1st round pick next year for your second rounder this year strategy...

IF Boss Ross does not get fired...

IF John Butler/AJ Smith/Schotty had not determined that Rodney Harrison was finished as a quality safety and then not released him...

IF Billy Joe Tolliver was really as good as they thought he was...

ETC.

dont like Rivers either but pass protection is very bad. I think Cam Cameron is missed more than Marty. Also Merriman dinged and off of roids and don Edwards huge loss.

Reminds me of how USC wins despite the Bozo.

Really? How were they doing before he got there? Enlighten us.

I got one, if Drew Brees was the starting QB for the Chargers they'd be as good as the New England Patriots, a team playing for its 4th superbowl in 7 years and perhaps one of the best teams ever in the history of the NFL. Hahahahahahahahahha

I love when you bash the Pac 10 then come out in a sports bra and baby blue panties to cheer for your beloved Chargers, a team that hasn't won a playoff game in eons....but just one player away from being as good as one of the best teams in history.

You sure know your football don't you.

Brees strengthens grip on MVP

Posted by Mike Florio on December 1, 2009 7:23 AM ET
After Brett Favre chalked up a second straight stellar performance for a 10-1 team that swept a trio of home games with a combined score of 98-29, we considered for the first time this year that the 40-year-old Ponce De Lorenzo deserves to be named the league's MVP.

Then came Monday night.

With a perfect passer rating, including five touchdown passes, not against the Lions, Seahawks, or Bears but against the New England Patriots, Drew Brees made his best case for the award in a 38-17 victory.

Depending on the last five weeks, our opinion could change. And we hope that the 50 Associated Press voters (including the guy who picked Keith Rivers for 2008 defensive rookie of the year) will wait until the regular season ends before making up their minds.

In the end, it could be appropriate to have co-MVPs, like 2003 (Peyton Manning and Steve McNair) and 1997 (Favre and Barry Sanders). Or maybe a three-way tie: Favre, Brees, and Manning.

Here's how we currently rank the leading candidates, in a feature that we might roll out on on a weekly basis until the season ends. If we remember.

1. Drew Brees: 11-0, perfect passer rating against the Patriots, and an ability to get the most out of everyone around him.

2. Brett Favre: We still think his helmet needs to be inspected for some type of alien technology that makes whoever wears the thing 15 years younger.

3. Peyton Manning: The quiet constant in the eye of a storm of change. 16-0 is a real possibility, and Manning still has a chance at breaking Dan Marino's single-season passing yardage record.

4. Chris Johnson: The best running back in the NFL, thanks to a knack for breaking long runs and no knack for putting the ball on the ground. Last year, one of the voters picked Johnson; none cast ballots for Brees.

5. Vince Young: He's 5-0. If he finishes 10-0, he deserves a few votes, even if they come at Chris Johnson's expense.
