[h=2]Is Jets' coaching situation stable?[/h] 9hr[h=2]Is Rex Ryan doing enough to save his job?[/h] By Lorenzo Reyes
Is Rex Ryan doing enough to save his job with the Jets?
Judging by owner Woody Johnson’s comments, it sounds like it.
“We’re happy with Rex,” Johnson said at a Super Bowl event, according to the New York Daily News. “Coaches have to be good teachers and good leaders and I think he’s both.”
With the hiring of general manager John Idzik over the off-season, there was speculation that Ryan was a lame-duck coach who would get fired at the end of the season, given the Jets’ predicted futility.
But New York (4-3) is coming off of a big victory against the Patriots, and is sitting one game out of first place in the AFC East.
Rookie QB Geno Smith, whose best weapons are Jeremy Kerley and Stephen Hill, has shown some potential in an inconsistent season. It hasn’t been pretty at times, but New York is competing, and that’s more than many predicted out of the Jets.
That may just save his job.
When asked if he anticipates keeping Ryan for another year, the Jets’ owner didn’t answer directly. What he did say, however, was quite revealing.
“I don’t make any statements like that,” Johnson said. “The only thing I’ll say is I’m happy with him. I think he’s a great teacher, a good teacher, maybe a great teacher and a good leader.”
Barring a second-half collapse, it sounds like Ryan is safe. Given the talent he has on offense, that may just be the right call.

People hate him but he has done an excellent job this year. If the Jets could go .500 he should keep his job.

he may be, although injuring his QB in the 4th QTR of an exhibition game by letting him play behind a offensive line you're going to cut just ain't very bright. That move may turn out saving his job because he can't be sticking with Sanchez now, and Smith is playing better.

he may be a coach that exceeds expectations with bad teams and falls short of expectations with better teams.

No way to know for sure but if Sanchez doesn't get hurt the Jets are 2-5 right now I bet. People forget Ryans first 2 years when they went deep in the playoffs, then Tannenbaum got them in cap trouble and they lost their way the past couple years. people think he's dumb cause he says dumb things. But Ryan is brilliant defensively but has a lot to learn as a head coach.

4-3 with a pretty average roster, not many "idiots" can accomplish that. The Jets are playing better than most people expected, Ryan should get some of the credit

HUH?? Do people forget that Rex Ryan was going to go with MARK SANCHEZ as his starting quarterback this season? And despite the fact that they'd probably be 1-6 right now if that were the case, I'd bet he'd STILL BE STICKING with him... meaning he has no clue how to properly evaluate offensive players, because there's no way he was going to make the correct decision of choosing Geno over Sanchez. That's ludicrous to think Ryan deserves credit for their surprising start.

The Jets right now are winning in spite of Rex Ryan as their head coach. Defensively? He's excellent, as he's proven in the past. But as a head coach? HAHAHA, without question this is a bottom-ten head-coach - at best. And let's also not forget that if Ryan didn't continue to push Sanchez as their starting QB from day one, they'd probably have a Super Bowl appearance or two, if not more, under their belts. Talk about wasting a really terrific Super Bowl-caliber defense for years.

Bottom Line: Rex Ryan, with his overrated knowledge, was selecting Mark Sanchez AGAIN to be his starting quarterback. Meaning it would be HIS and ONLY HIS decision that they'd be 1-6 or 2-5 right now. It led to a very unlikely injury to Sanchez (Which, ironically, was caused by yet another boneheaded move by Rex Ryan) for the Jets to be where they are, meaning it's been more of a fluke that has caused their success.

AGAIN... Rex Ryan was going to choose Mark Sanchez over Geno Smith... that's all you need to know about Rex Ryan's "knowledge" or "talent evaluation" as a head coach, when countless people such as myself have been saying Mark Sanchez would never amount into anything more than a back-up at the professional level (A proven-to-be correct assessment, by the way, by those of us who called it) since his overrated days at USC.

The belief that Rex Ryan has any considerable responsibility for what the Jets have done this year is absolutely laughable. Let it sink into your heads: Rex Ryan chose Mark Sanchez again. Let it sink in...

Say what you will about Mark Sanchez but he and Rex Ryan have gotten the Jets to the AFC Championship Game in 2 of the last 4 seasons...

... Thanks to a one-of-the-best-in-an-entire-decade defensive unit. It's the age-old argument why guys like Kerry Collins and Trent Dilfer have Super Bowl bling. The fact that Mark Sanchez STILL couldn't even get to a Super Bowl with that defense puts him even below those two mediocre quarterbacks.

Rex is a defensive genius. Not only is he responsible for the Jets good D, he's also largely responsible for the Chiefs D revival because their DC Sutton is using what he learned from Rex the last few years, and largely using Rex's aggressive, come from anywhere, scheme. He's not a very good HC however, but if he has an effective OC, like Morningweig, his teams will do better then expected. He really is very much like his dad.

I don't think a team will go to back to back conf title games with a QB like Sanchez for a long time. Rex obviously a great defensive coach, only coach to beat Manning and Brady in the same year until Harbaugh and the Ravens did it last year.

Sure the Jets suck, most teams without good QB play aren't very good, especially on a consistent basis. He is 1 of the best coaches in the NFL though...

That tat gotta be fake I think...

Owner Woody Johnson announced after the team's 20-7 victory over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday that Ryan, who has one year remaining on his contract, will return next season. The decision ended several weeks of speculation surrounding the fate of the popular coach.
It was not immediately clear if Ryan will coach through his existing deal or be given a contract extension. Neither Johnson nor general manager John Idzik would discuss details related to Ryan's contract.
Ryan's job status was uncertain heading into the regular-season finale at Miami since the Jets have gone three straight years without a playoff appearance. It was also speculated Idzik could want to hire his own coach heading into his second season on the job.
It was an unusual setup, with Johnson choosing last January to retain Ryan despite firing general manager Mike Tannenbaum. Johnson hired Idzik to replace Tannenbaum, with the condition that Ryan remain as coach.
Neither Johnson nor Idzik previously commented on the situation, and Ryan said he hadn't heard what his fate would be.

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan, left, talks to safety Ed Reed during the second quarter of an NFL …

Ryan appeared loose after his final regular-season practice Friday - looking like anything but someone on the verge of losing his job. Then his team beat its division rival Sunday.
The Jets opened 5-4 and as one of the NFL's most surprising teams led by rookie quarterback Geno Smith heading into their bye week. But they set an NFL record by alternating wins and losses through their first 10 games. A three-game skid sent New York from controlling its playoff fate to barely in the postseason picture.
After the Jets were eliminated a few weeks ago, there were serious questions whether Ryan would be retained.
Ryan received overwhelming support from fans, players and ex-players taking to social media to state their case why he should stay. Ryan received a Gatorade bath on the sideline after the win Sunday.
One fan started an online petition urging Johnson to save Ryan's job, and it received nearly 500 signatures. Many reporters and columnists were also in favor of Ryan getting another chance, in light of the coach far exceeding the grim expectations outside the organization heading into training camp, and managing a break-even record despite injuries to key players throughout the year.
Despite their personalities being opposites - Ryan sometimes brash and humorous, Idzik low-key and buttoned up - a somewhat toned-down Ryan described his relationship with Idzik as ''great'' several times. The GM also was complimentary of Ryan in his few meetings with the media throughout the season.
Ryan and Idzik will now look forward to building next season's team with plenty of issues to consider, starting with quarterback. The Jets must determine whether Smith can be their quarterback of the future, and whether they'll draft another player to compete with him or sign a proven veteran.
New York will likely part with quarterback Mark Sanchez and wide receiver Santonio Holmes to save money on the salary cap, and there are several potential key free agents, including right tackle Austin Howard, right guard Willie Colon and kicker Nick Folk.
Expectations were extremely low for this year's team. One major factor was the trade of the Jets' best player - Darrelle Revis - to Tampa Bay, a big blow to Ryan's defense. There was also a dearth of game-changing talent on offense, and an underwhelming yet closely contested quarterback competition between Sanchez and Smith, a second-round draft pick. That was settled only when Sanchez was lost for the year with a shoulder injury in the third preseason game.
New offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg was forced to try to develop Smith on the fly. After a solid first few games, Smith became a turnover machine before bouncing back in his last four outings of the season, in which the Jets went 3-1 to finish .500.

Nothing would make me happier than for Sexy Rexy to return to the NJ Jets next year....

Oh, except them giving him a long term contract, that would be even better.
