What will this bring in the future? How will some TV stations make any money as the advertising during breaks will be useless. . . :icon_conf

Phillips has already applied for a patent for a device that will freeze your TV from changing the channel whenever a comercial is on. It seems like that is their answer.

Advertising is pervasive enough. Movies force you to sit through comercials and previews. DVDs do the same. There was some study done a while ago that reported an average person comes across a couple thousand ads every day.

Has Phillips done any market research? No one (at least that I know) would even consider buying a TV with such a device.

I don't really think it would be much different than it is now. I mean, now, people change the channels during commercials anyway (at least I do).

What I forsee them doing is building their TV sets with these devices included and then charging an extra fee to have it removed. Create the problem, then charge for the solution.

i don't know waht the fix is here for marketers, but utilization of Internet Marketing will be huge in upcoming years, even bigger than it is now. Thing is, advertising builds brand awareness and loyalty, and as much as we hate commercials, consumers do rely on them to judge brands when we walk into stores. They provide a basis of comparison, and the bottom line is that alot of people don't have hte time or resources to adequately search for the best deals or best quality, so they go with who they trust (which tend to be the Best Buys of the world that can advertise and demonstrate superior customer service).

I'm all for commercial-free television, but it's not going to make life any easier on us as consumers.

But if all TVs came with such a device...I can see more product placement being the way or the future, either that or Pay per every channel.
