Let's be honest. In the USA a great NBA player would trade a gold Medal for an NBA title 7 days a week.
An American PGA golfer would rather win a major then a ryder cup.
A MLB player would much rather win a World Series ring then whatever it is they call that new shit thing that's baseballs version of the World Cup.

For the most part american athletes treat world competition as an afterthought.

And this is not just players. For the most part fans of American teams would rather there team win a title in the nfl or NBA then a gold medal.

For instance I would be much more stoked if the Saints won a Super Bowl then I would be if America won some type of World Cup version American style football.

So my question is do soccer fans get more excited when there country wins a championship then they do when there favorite professional soccer team wins a championship?

If that's the case that's opposite of over 90% of Americans

I'm pretty sure for a soccer player the ultimate is to win a World Cup. Never mind you asked about the fans. Idk

And how much more prestigious is winning the World Cup in soccer then it is to win the gold metal in soccer?

If America wasn't so dominant in basketball then it would be different. Basketball in total means so little to the medal count in the olympics.

if there was a world cup (every 4 years, pools, etc) style of basketball play and the USA wins once every 20 years, I bet they would rather win that than a title

They'd rather win a World Cup as far as Soccer goes.......There are so many professional leagues around the world in Soccer (although obviously some bigger than others) that the World Cup is the ultimate.......Ironically, the world looks at the Olympics in Soccer like we look at the World Baseball classic as most major countries in soccer don't even send their best teams over there which is why teams from Africa do better in the Olympics than the World Cup.

Don't think most NBA players would rather win an Olympic gold medal than an NBA title. US gold medals in basketball are expected, although the rest of the world has made great strides in the past decade.
I think soccer players would value a World Cup title much more than a Premier League title. Some of those countries have nothing else but soccer, and the players probably get laid 365 for four years if they win the World Cup.

WC is more important has more value in soccer history than leagues, players that were great on soccer domestic leagues that didn't actually succeed in a world cup are less famous and renown. Strategy wise, it marks how strategy's are going to be used in the next 4 years until the next world cup... It also propels a great number of players to play in Europe from the lesser known leagues, as is the biggest audition. A good championship league run will never make you as "valued" as if you won the world cup with an amazing performance.

Eric Cantona, great french player for Manchester United didnt make it to France 98. His legend suffered. Roberto Baggio didnt win it by missing a PK in the final, he lost it, his legend suffered.
