I was actually thinking of donating some money to the Haitians until I heard this

i agree that we need to do more at home, i feel it's a disgrace the way some people have been forgotten in this country (particularly vets). BUT we do have the ways and means to help people both foreign and domestic... that's what makes this country great. the only problem is we don't always choose to do it.

It's financially challenging to help people domestically when we're spending so much waging war in other countries.

Killing is a very expensive habit.

right, because issues outside our borders don't affect us... oh, wait.

i'm not sure about you, but I had $20 that i felt I could live without, and I imagine a lot of other folks do too - so if your argument is we don't have the money to help others (be they domestic, or otherwise) i would disagree. even better, the $20 i gave to the fund for haiti won't stop me from continuing to give to local issues.

Most of the issues outside our borders would not affect us if we did not but in. Many of these conflicts have been going on for decades, centuries in some cases. They would continue to kill each other off for whatever their crusade is. We get involved & just further create more enemies as if that is what we really need.

The U.S. has hundreds of millions for aid to foreign countries yet shitted on their own in this country during Katrina. They do next to nothing to curb the drug problems or homeless issues in our border. But wait, the government is a big part of the problem in those 2 issues amongst the many others.

I am not knocking you for contributing, but just feel the outpouring in general to do so is ridiculous when it is nonexistent for daily important problems.

Never seen a any Haitian help during Katrina or Ike. If the shoe was on the other foot they would careless. Do something for the country you live in Country first. If you want to send someone money send a package to our troops they would love the suport..

I love America. This is truly the greatest country in the world.

I wish Haiti the best but I really wonder if this isn't some sort of way for nature to balance itself out.

That country is a mess and it won't get better ever.

LOL if you truly believe your first statement.

The rest of your post is just appalling. "A way for nature to balance itself out" - what the hell is this?

No, Haiti will never get better if we just quit trying altogether. The same goes for your grammar, although I doubt help would do you much good at this point.

Perhaps you didn't see Haitians helping with Katrina or Ike because they do not have the vast financial resources that Americans do and thus cannot donate their money to the cause or create foundations which use donated money to send people over to help with the recovery. And it's not like Haitians could just go buy a ticket and fly to the US to help with the relief effort, considering their average wage is something like $1/day.

If the roles were reversed (Haiti the wealthy, powerful nation while American is the current day Haiti), of course they would help. Do you realize how bad that would look if they didn't (and if America didn't in this case)? Basic foreign relations. :ohno:

pretty sure any justification for, those with the means, not helping in some small way is greed. i really can't see it any other way. but all this "they wouldn't do it for us" BS is ridiculous... two wrongs and all, ya know?

now if you want to talk about US foreign policy, i'm willing to listen and may agree with a lot of what you have to say. but on a personal level we have no excuses.

So with that thinking, can we count on donations to soup kitchens, homeless shelters, food banks, etc....? I don't hear people offering to donate to that. Why must it take extreme tragedy for people to want to help foreign countries no less? Why do we only hear the media encouraging donations during the holiday season especially Thanksgiving?

This world has a whole is so fucked up, it is sad to think what the future generations will have left.

In every disaster situation like this you have to wonder how much of the donation money actually gets to the people that need it. The government or corrupt officials etc end up keeping it all or most of it.

You can't imagine when people are starving and anarchy begins to take root. Could have been the prisoners that escaped the prison that completely collapsed in the earthquake. Thousands of murderers, rapists, assasins, thieves, etc. are now free and terrorizing the helpless. Make the $10 donation. You'll feel better about yourself!

Text "Haiti" To 90999 and it will just be added to your phone bill. It's easy, quick and automatic. Do the right thing!

Yes, only $10 but that adds up if all or a lot of people do that. $10 shouldn't break us either I would hope.
