I'm not buying it for investment value, I'm gonna drive it for the next several years. I don't understand this mindset...

Nissan has some great financing deals.

Maxima:

http://local.nissanusa.com/san-diego-area/maxima.html

Others:

http://local.nissanusa.com/san-dieg...mp=Regional.Promo.Homepage.PFA.MPG-background.

At the top of the page, there is a link to "Shop another local area" to put in your zip code.

If you are considering the A4, I would read the comments on this 2008. I know it is not the same year, but I am sure it is useful.

http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2008/01/audi-a4-20t-review/

The Audi A8 is one of my dream cars. Don't know if the A4 is good or not.

Another good site for information about cars.

www.truedelta.com

It has reliability information submitted by owners for just about every vehicle.

I would do a google search for a message board for the model and manufacturer you are considering. There is a board for just about every manufacturer and even some just for specific models.

Spending time to do this can be worth it.

I am semi-retired from the car business after spending over 40 yrs in it. I am now working part time as a buyer/consultant for a pre-owned dealer. Car prices are really high at this time because of the gasoline situation.Yes it is better to buy a vehicle that is at least 2yrs old because of the depreciation on a new vehicle, buy used & let someone else suffer from the depreciation. I am partial to Honda, for instance you can purchase a Honda accord or civic wjth over 100.000 miles on it & have the timing belt & water pump [protective maintenance] changed & drive it another 100,000 miles. Good luck in what you decide.

There is nothing in this world like a brand new car right off the assembly line. I understand the value it loses in its first two years but shouldn't that really only affect the original poster if he is looking to only drive it for two years and sell it. If he is looking to keep the car for say 5-10 years then whether he buys the car brand new or two years old it will still hold the same value for him at resale/trade in time.

I say pay the extra money and buy a brand new car. Get your factory rebates and great interest rate that dealers only offer on certain brand new vehicles and enjoy. You never what was super glued in place on a used car and what issues you are acquiring. I don't care what anybody tells me but any car that I bought brand new say 5 years ago is in better condition and runs smoother than any used car that is only 3 years old. I bought a new 2004 Tahoe and by time I totaled it in 2010 with 60k miles it drove smoother than any used 2007 Tahoe that I test drove in 2010 with 20k miles on it. Plus the wear and tear on the used cars were a lot worse than mine.

Thank you. I understand you pay extra for new but you get better financing deals, warranties, longer terms, and more peace of mind...

What happened to your
1996 Maxima?

I'm trading it in. I took a new job that requires I drive back and forth to indiana (about 200 miles) twice a week. My Max has been great to me but I don't trust it with all that back and forth and will probably end up continuing to dump money into it; money I could just use on a car payment.

Also work is helping pay my car payment so I feel it's time to upgrade. I've been driving that Max for 15 years now.

I expect I'll only get 800 or so on trade in but it's starting to become a money pit.

right on.....get what you want, drive it for as long as you want to and then trade it for a different vehicle which you want and drive it for as long as you want etc.

Dante's well-intentioned advice is rooted in old-school "advice from our fathers" who back in the 1960-1990 era often looked at a vehicle as a true "investment" which could create a "profit" for the user after a few years of use.

Very rare in the year 2011. Unless one is in a position to literally pay cash for a nice late model rig, it's reasonably responsible to just figure a perpetual $3-500 a month into your household budget for "car payment".
