I have been a Directv customer for 9 years and I am going to be moving at the end of the month. I currently have 2 DVR's and 1 HD receiver. At my new address I am looking to upgrade my package and get 2 HD DVR's for the rooms, 1 HD receiver for the living room and use one of the standard DVR's for an additional room.

Well Directv wants me to pay an extra $300.00 for the upgrade of receivers. Considering I would be leasing these receivers that is straight customer rape. After all of the years of having the most expensive package DirecTV offers and ordering the NFL and College Football package, I can't believe they want me to come out of the pocket even more.

I have heard some of you guys on this forum having success stories about getting directv to get on their knees to satisfy their customers to keep them from canceling service. Can I get some tips on how to approach this method?

Call them, tell them your moving and if you have to pay 1 cent to upgrade your leaving and either getting Fios or Dish, they will bend. It does work, I called and told them I was gonna leave because Dish was offering an HD dvr for free. They had a guy there in a couple days, new HD dish and HD dvd for free.

Are you married? or have a roomate? If so when you move sign up under their name and get all the new customer benefits.

Also, you need to say a prayer that you don't get a bad HD dvr box, I went through that BS, they replaced, but still took a couple days.

I recently added an HD dish, and a couple of HD DVR's.

My contract was already up.

I called them and told them that I wanted to upgrade to HD yada yada yada and that I would go with the company that gave me the best deal.

The lady came back and offered me a decent deal, but I figured I could do better. I said I would do my research with Dish and get back with them.

I found the best Dish deal I could find for a new customer, and they eventually beat it after haggling with them.

You might have to work them a little, but they will usually bend on their original offer.

I'm not sure how much though if you are still in the middle of a contract.

Paying $300 to DTV for anything is insanity. If you talk to enough people, they'll eventually give you whatever you need for free (or close to it). The phrases "Can I talk to your supervisor?" and "I'd like to speak to someone in your cancellation department" generally get their attention pretty quickly. Even if they do transfer you there, just hang up and call back. Eventually, someone will help you out.

My bro in law had three old receivers in his house last summer. He called up and asked if they could give him a deal on some new ones. They said no, so he told them he wanted to cancel and switch to Dish Network. The lady put him on hold, then came back and ultimately sent him three brand spanking new receivers...each one was the latest model they had. He only had to pay for shipping, which was maybe $40.

I've been with them for 6 years or so. Before last football season, I saw an advertisement for new customers offering free NFL Sunday ticket and free DVR service with their premium package for $75/month throughout the season, which is a hell of a deal. I called up DTV, explained to them that I'd been a customer for a while, etc...then just asked "I realize that this deal is intended for new customers only, but is there any way you can work with me on this? I really like that deal and would be thrilled if I could have it..." He put me on hold, talked to his manager and gave it to me.

Just keep calling back. They'll give you whatever you want within reason.

I called them again last night and now they told me they would give me one upgrade to the HD DVR Receiver for free but I would need to pay $199 for the second one.

I am still not satisfied.

Go through with the threat....call them and just say Id like to cancel my services....of course they will say why sir? Tell them you are moving and you got a better deal from dishnetwork or cable company.....they will probably ask what that deal was.....make something up and they will give you a counter offer Im sure....if its not to your liking...tell them, nope, not good enough....and if its not good enough, leave them...you can always go back as a new customer later in time.....when I threaten my cable company they bend badly.....but in my situation I would leave them and goto the other company....Keep us posted on what happens!

I tried this twice, and I am usually good at these things. I got a $10.00 monthly

credit, but not nearly what I wanted.

0 for 2.

DirecTV are being a bunch of pricks and don't want to upgrade me for free to the HD DVR boxes. I figure I have been a paying customer of theirs for 9 years now and in those 9 years have probably spent $15,000 on cable bills. I am just going to cancel my service and either go with Dishnetwork or just have my bother use his name and get a new Directv account. I only used Directv for the NFL package anyways.

These greedy bastards even want to charge me a cancellation fee because they swapped out a leased receiver because it was defective over a year ago. Of course I am going to tell them to fuck themselves with cancellation fee. My credit score is in the 800's how bad can a little cancellation fee hurt my credit report?

Or better yet I think I will give them a call and tell them I want to change the billing name on my account becuase my roommates that are staying is going to continue with the service. I will give Directv a fake name and then cancel it at the end of the month under the fake name.
