So far I am 2-1 on the year...good luck to everyone this week.
Pick #1
ohio + 11 vs MINNESOTA….While I like the Golden Gopher defense, I think this is too many points to be laying to a tough Bobcat squad who have this game circled on their calendar. The oddsmakers are putting a lot of stock in Minnesota’s home loss to TCU in the opening game. However, we need to pay more attention to Minnesota’s wins in order to determine if they can cover this spread. First of all, Minnesota is averaging only 16 points per game, which makes it difficult to cover an 11 point spread. Both of their two victories, over Colorado St (23-20 in OT) and Kent (10-7) Minnesota could not cover 11 points against teams that are just not as good as Ohio. On the other hand, the 3-0 Bobcats are only giving up 17 points per game which means their defense is going to challenge Minnesota’s ponderous offense even more. Ohio’s 21-10 victory over a Marshall team, which is arguably as strong as Minnesota indicates that Ohio has a shot at winning this game outright. With Minnesota’s Big 10 opener against Northwestern a week away, I see the Gophers looking ahead to the following week and falling behind early in this game, making the cover very difficult. Take the points and 7 units on Ohio.
Pick #2
LOUISIANA - LAFAYETTE -7 1/2 vs akron…..The Zips are traveling to Cajun country to take on the fast and athletic ULL team. So far this year Akron is 0-2 against FBS teams, losing 3-41 at Oklahoma and 7-24 in a home game against Pitt. Akron’s other game was against Savannah St, which is basically a high school team. Now granted, the Cajuns are not Oklahoma but you need to look at the fact that Akron has only scored a total of 10 points in those FCS games. Not exactly offensive juggernauts - those Zips. In fact, they are aptly named the Zips based on their lack of scoring prowess.
ULL, on the other hand, is coming off of a bye week after losing a tough one against a very good Kentucky team (33-40 loss) and then coming back to beat Northwestern LA (44-17). You have to like the fact that ULL is averaging 38 points a game, and that they scored 33 against Kentucky when South Carolina could only score 22 against Kentucky, and Florida could only score 14 against them.
The Rajin Cajun offense won’t have trouble scoring, but the Zips are going to struggle, especially in this crazy Louisiana hot house. Going with the chalk and 4 units on ULL.
