scenario: live deep stack tourney. 200 dollar buy in 20k in chips.
a little over 2 hours into the tournament. Player A has 31k in chips. Player B is table leader with 32 k in chips.

Images: Player A loose aggressive. Has been running over the table
Player B Tight aggressive but appears card dead.

300-600 blinds no antes

utg calls 600 fold fold. player A raises to 3500. player B makes it 9000 to go. folds all the way back to player A. his hand is pocket 9's.

options:

1. fold
2. call lets see a flop out of position
3. reraise
4. shove

how should player A play this and what range should he put player B on.

actual results to be posted tomorrow

I am curious to why player A is making a raise that is 6x the BB with pp9. Next, after putting in that much and having to call 5500 more is pretty bad too out of position and with pocket 9's.

For some reason, I think you are player B and he either called and spiked a 9 against your AA/KK/AK or he went all in and spiked a 9 vs the same 3 hands as above

As ECS said, player A raised very large considering the blinds.

for player A to raise so large and player B to pump it another 5500, 99 would have to lay it down. I would guess a raise of that magnitude by player B means player A is up against a higher pp (bad news bears) or two overs (coinflip). That means A either has to get lucky or really lucky.

If player A were short on chips (instead of 2nd on table), then I would push (probably instead of raise)

It hurts to lay down mid pp preflop but the decision is quite easy.

(Only exception is if there are reads on chip leader indicating he will push with weak cards trying to bully the raiser)

Player A is getting more than 2.5/1 odds from the pot, unless he can put B on an over pair he should at least call.

If player B really wants a loose aggr. player out of the hand he can't give him good odds.

I suspect you are player B and had AA or KK.

very astute ecs and big play. i was player b and i was holding aces. i purposely gave him the pot odds i did and i acted frustrated like i was just playing back at him because i was tired of folding. i thought my move was transparent and any idiot would put me on a big hand and fold but i wanted this guy to call. he shoved. i called. he did not catch a 9 instead it went j,10,2 turn 8 river 7. i got what i thought i wanted the perfect scenario all my chips in against the second stack at 82%. the more i think about it the better play might have been just to call.
1. he is not guaranteed to see 5 cards
2. it may induce a squeeze play behind me and then i can shove with the aces
seems to me this could have been the safer play and maybe even more lucrative at the same time. obviously i could have made him go away with second pair after the flop if i shove after his continuation bet. (i think)
feedback please. as great a scenario as i had (even though it basically busted me) is the call the optimum play here? btw i busted when i was all in in my big blind. 2-5 off catches 2 pair but loses to set on the river. no complaints there i guess but it still hurt

You made a great play. He was an idiot making an idiot play and you got screwed and it's really that simple. Don't ever second guess going all in with the best starting hand in hold 'em.

I think you played fine, although since he DID raise so big you could of just called, let him fire at the pot and then move in, I can't see how he calls their, I will often do this if someone makes a raise that is TOO big 5-6x the blind, if I have a big pair I will just smooth call and let them hang themselves

well, catching four to the straight...you are too good to know the answer, you had less good luck than he that day...or more bad luck that day...i'll bet the aggressive player never thought an 7-j run would show up either...maybe the flop would have got the agressive player out, but who knows, i think you will win more doing what you did than smoothing-it to 5th or 6th street...
