I can't pretend they're perfect, far from it. And I do believe they're capable of not representing us or protecting us in many circumstances. I don't respect them as much as I did when I was a kid
However, I do believe they've done a lot to protect us. They can stop 999 out of 1000 terrorist attacks, but that 1 in a 1000 gets all the publicity

Years ago, I remember reading Bob Woodward's book "Bush at War" which detaied how the CIA was crossing Afghanistan town by town with suitcases full of money buying off drug lords and other rebels in the "war on terror" against the Taliban and "Al Qeada"
It never dawned on me back then that this has always been the modus operandi of these rogue corrupt govt agencies destabilizing countries, causing chaos everywhere and buying off third parties to do all their dirty deeds.
